Hi guys.
My 250GB LaCie External hard drive is failing. I tried to copy the data off of it before attempting anything but to no avail (Move operation would not start). So, I started a ChkDsk /f /r but it got stock at 10% on Stage/Step 4. I know it's failing. Windows still show it in "Computer" and the last time I tried, I could see folder structure. So, now, in a last attempt to save anything, I want to cancel that and try to image the drive to an image file on another hard drive with the bad sectors in hope of getting some files back. Is there a safe way to end that chkdsk without damaging any further?

The thing had no SMART whatsoever... I couldn't predict its failing at all... :(

So, any help on that matter?

Thanks.

I would just use CTRL+Alt+ DEl and stop the precess . It won't make it any worse.

Maybe try this Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.

run this right click on the drib=ve and then "explore" it should show up what data files foldrers whatever yuo have in there.

You can also do a surface test with this app. But remember you need to choose the right drive or partition and the right action then you have to apply those actions they do not automatically run.

post back a screen shot of what you see when you first open it up so we can se what we are dealing with.

As a by the by and I don't want to sound pessimistic but I have had sevearl Lacie drives in that have or are failing I don't like the brand perosnally so if you are going to chnage choose something else - Saegate is my preferred brand.

I think it "unstuck". Before, it was file 5170-something files, now, it's 11543. It may be running after all. I guess I'll be leaving it overnight...

EDIT

@ICit2lol If I still can't recover my data after the chkdsk, I'll try your steps. I had this LaCie HDD since 2006 I believe. I have no money for replacement right now. I guess my Samsung/Seagate 1TB is gotta hold the data until I can get something better with more space.

Well if it is of any consolation it is quite an easy job to replace the drive within that enclosure if you are handy with a few tools . The drive itself is not the expensive bit and just about any SATA drive will fit as they are pretty standard so say the new complete drive costs $150 and a new hard drive $75 well the maths say it all eh?:)

I did one just three month s ago and stuck a Seagate in so to all intents and purposes the unit looks just the same.

Unfortunately, the hard drive is locked inside the enclosure so we can't remove it. Anyway, chkdsk finished (!!!) and Windows is copying the files off the drive to my Internal 1TB.

Anyway, if I get another hard drive, it's gonna be an internal 4TB. Nothing else. And I will move music on it.

I'll keep you updated if I can succesfully get all my data back without a hitch. :)

EDIT

Well, mission accomplished. All files were saved succesfully. Now, it can die in peace. Thanks for everyone who helped.
