Hi

I noticed this problem when I tried to delete something off the drive, then I tried to run an antivirus scan and it gave me an error if incapacity to delete viruses due to a dirty disk and that I should run chkdsk.

So I right clock on the drive and attempt check now. It tells me that it must first dismount the drive before it can do so and asks if I would like to force a dismount. To which I respond yes. Then, the window disappears and I hear no word or see no signs of any chkdsk happening. Naturally I reboot the terminal expecting fire-works and chemistry, but get greeted by the sound of windows starting up again.

I have tried the administrator driven command prompt in this sequence. C:\Windows\System32>chkdsk x:/f
response:
The type of file system is exFAT.
Volume Serial Number is 2C7E-22C5

C:\Windows\System32>
then:
C:\Windows\System32>chkdsk x:/r
response:
The type of the file system is exFAT.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk May run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? <Y/N>
response:
Volume dismounted. ALL opened handles to this volume are now invalid.
Volume Serial Number is 2C7E-22C5

C:\Windows\System32>
then:
C:\Windows\System32>chkdsk x:/r
response:
The type of file system is exFAT.
Volume Serial Number is 2C7E-22C5

C:\Windows\System32>
then:
C:\Windows\System32>chkdsk x:/x
response:
The type of file system is exFAT.
Volume Serial Number is 2C7E-22C5

C:\Windows\System32>
So:
C:\Windows\System32>x:

X:\>
X:\>chkdsk
response:
The type of file system is exFAT.
This volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk might report errors when no corruption is present.
Volume Serial Number is 2C7E-22C5

X:\>
So:
X:\>chkdsk x:/x
response:
The type of file system is exFAT.
Cannot lock current drive.
Volume dismounted. ALL opened handles to this volume are now invalid.
Volume Serial Number is 2C7E-22C5

X:\>
So:
X:\>chkdsk
response
The type of file system is exFAT.
This volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk might report errors when no corruption is present.
Volume Serial Number is 2C7E-22C5

Try this before panicking. Open Computer, right click on C: drive then click Properties at the bottom. Click the Tools Tab. At the top click the Check Now Button in Error Checking. Before starting the error check make sure both options are unchecked. This way you won't get the Disk Is In Use crap. If it completes telling you the disk is fine and ready for use, then you have some other problem. Like maybe a registry hack that's not letting you delete files.

In that case Run MBAM.

If error check does not complete with no errors, post back with the Disk Management Screen. ( See this post for instructions how to post the screen shot ) http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/252397-removing-triple-boot.html#post2091799

That would be great, but I need this to work for my storage drive not my C drive. It works like a dream, and it does so because everything except my os is on my other drive. Every program every piece of media, Everything. The gravity of this problem goes beyond merely fixing the os which should never adversely affect me.

If I cant fix this drive I may need to format it and lose 3 months worth of meticulous collecting. I am also just about to get my new graphics card. This can't Happen. I'm past having a baby now, I'm on my way to baptism...

Is there something I can do?

Thanks a lot for your educated insight. I will back it up and format it. Purchasing ANOTHER 2tb hard drive in a day or so.
