Hi everyone.

Lately CHKDSK has been running on startup approx 1 in 3 times and seems to be busy fixing things. I wondered if somebody can decipher the problem for me? A few recent logs are attached below.

Some of the affected files mentioned are from programs that have been malfunctioning lately. Swarm is the program for my mouse, which always crashes on start up despite repeated reinstallation. The various games files are probably from Steam, which has been playing up occasionally too. My OS (thankfully) is on a separate SSD drive and as far as I know hasn't had any problems.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Nic

Welcome to the forum. Is it crashing or shutdown wrong? I would go to the disk makers site download their test tools and see what it says that tests the hardware not file system like check disk

Thanks for the reply!

No crashes and it's always shut down properly. I will have a look at the website as you suggested.

Update-Used Seagate's Seatools to run various tests -SMART check, Short drive self test, Short generic and long generic. Passed all the tests. No issues.

Thanks for advice Megahertz07. The CrystalDiskInfo tool came up with these results. Not sure how to interpret them though. Looks quite bad.

Edit: maybe not. It says health good in huge writing and i missed it! :o

Samuria got to the point.
- External HDD should be left over a flat surface when in use. Don't ever move it when in use.
- Prior of disconnecting the disk, you must "shut it off" by pressing "Safely remove Hardware and Eject media". If you cut communication while data is being written, it corrupts the disk.

Thanks but it's an internal drive. It's possible that I am lightly jolting the case and thus the HDD sometimes. It's in an awkward corner and sometimes I have to slide it out to get to the ports at the back, which I would often do when it's still on. Not sure that's it but no harm in cutting it out and seeing if it helps.

The fact that CHKDSK is messing with Swarm files and Swarm invariably malfunctions seems too much of a coincidence. I have reinstalled the program and it works until the PC is restarted. I wonder if it would work if instead installed on the C: drive?

Edit:It was already on C: Must have been a user-profile related file (stored on D:)

Sorry, didn't know it's an internal drive.
With the computer off, open the case and check the power and SATA cables.

I think that was it! When I opened the case, I noticed that the power cable that connects to both drives was under a lot of tension. A few months ago I made an effort to tidy up the cables because the case is poorly designed. Looks like I was a bit overzealous. Turned the PC back on and it couldn't find the D drive at all. After a bit of rearranging, the D drive is back and suddenly the Swarm program is working again, which is a good sign I think. Might be my imagination but everything seems to be running a little faster too! Thank you both for your help! :D
