CHKDSK Occuring in Win 7 boot for Dual Boot win7/win10 computer

Hello everyone, I have a Dell Optiplex 760 SFF that has both win 7 and win 10 installed on a 1TB hard drive in the following partition order:
500 mb system reserve, 100gb win 7, 750gb data, 80gb win 10
I've also disabled the metro bootloader, as it wastes times when booting to win 7.

Whenever I reboot to Win 7 after booting into Win 10 before, the system requires a chkdsk of the Win 10 and data partition. I looked around the forums here and the win 10 forums, and have disabled fast boot in Win 10 as mentioned throughout, but it still results in chkdsk being required.

I've tried to do this on other computers such as an MSI laptops with Win7, with similar results.

Is there something else I need to do so that Win 7 doesn't do disk check?

Thanks for all the help in advance.

Hello,
From what I understand of your post, I guess now one can have multiple UEFI partitions to choose from...
Not sure about win 10 since I've stayed away from it, but I have a UEFI Win 7, MBR Win 7, and MBR Win XP triple boot system. From all I read 2 years ago, it was impossible to have a dual boot stup with multiple UEFI systems. That might have changed. The only way I got to do it was by letting the "uefi Bios" default to UEFI Win 7, and by forcing a F-11 boot to another disk with a EasyBCD bootloader for my Win7 MBR / Win XP MBR partitions.
If your UEFI partitions for Win 7 / Win 10 are conflicting, maybe they report a chkdsk automatically since you disabled the Metro loader.
Thanks for your post as it informed me of something I thought was impossible. Sorry for not being more helpful.
Regards,
JohnPC

I don't believe that my hard drive is set for UEFI. I installed win 7 first before adding win 10 to the hard drive. and my hard drive properties state that the partition style is MBR. Looks like not many people know of similar situations and potential solutions to my problem though.

This occurs when you have Fast Startup (the default) set in Windows 10.
Fast startup is a hibernate like mode in Windows 10 and it leaves the drives in a state that Windows 7 does not understand, therefore it initiates chkdsk.
Turning off fast startup in Windows 10 will fix the problem.

Hi,
Yep Fast start is a bugger :)
I'd personally use cmd and disable hibernation as well inside win-10
Win-10 has a nasty habit of resetting fast start after major updates install
powercfg -h off

You can also for good measure disable fast or quick start up in your bios.

I did mention I disabled fast boot/startup.....re checking power options again shows that it is turned off. There shouldn't be any problems with the settings being reset since I installed win 10 to the partition last Monday, got it fully updated and ticked off fast startup.

oh.. look like fast boot and fast startup are two different things.. at any rate. fast startup is disabled. and fast boot won't exist for a bios only computer like the optiplex 760

wasn't uefi started to be used in computers that shipped with win 8? Or am I just being an idiot? From my limited knowledge I thought uefi was used as a replacement for bios and started being introduced to pcs along with win 8. Since this optiplex 760 started as a vista computer I thought no UEFI is included. If I'm wrong due to my lack of knowledge please excuse me.
I really just want to now how to dual boot win 7 and win 10, without a chkdsk occuring everytime I switch to win 7. I've tried out disabled hibernate completely as suggested, but didn't work. And like I said above, fast startup has been disabled since fully updating win 10.

Then fast start will not even be listed in power options :)

I've also disabled the metro bootloader, as it wastes times when booting to win 7.

So how are you selecting each OS ?

I've built W7/W10 dual boot systems where each OS was on a separate HDD, selected using F key one time boot menu. I got the chkdsk problem, which was solved by disabling W10 fast start.

AFAIK, if the OS's are installed oldest first in the standard fashion, you are presented with the W10 'select OS' screen, and there is no need for fast start disabling. It seems the OP is not using the W10 OS selector - 'wastes time' . . .

Hello, Yes. I'm still sharing data in the data partition between the two OSes, but not between OS partitions. Is that such a problem?

As for wasnotwas's question. I disabled the metro bootloader using easybcd, so that I get os selection at the windows boot manager (black screen with white words) like shown here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/5110-dual-boot-change-os-name-windows-boot-manager.html

Like I said in the initial post, I disabled the metro bootloader as the OS selection seems to be taken after windows 10 is mostly loaded, and selecting win 7 causes the computer to shut down and restart itself afterwards before going into loading win 7. In addition, with the metro bootloader enabled, and win 7 being the default (which is how I'd like), the computer boots straight into win 7 without showing OS selection screen at all. However, with OS selection settings at default with the metro bootloader on, I noticed that chkdsk does not occur win each win 7 boot.

Is the metro bootloader selection doing something different in comparison to the windows boot manager so that chkdsk doesn't occur?

However, with OS selection settings at default with the metro bootloader on, I noticed that chkdsk does not occur win each win 7 boot.

I think you've answered your own question.

If it takes a few seconds more to boot via the W10 selector - what's the problem, if the chkdsk business goes away ? This will be compensated when you use W10 - with fast start enabled, W10 will boot faster than with it off.

My preferred dual boot method is to install each OS on its own HDD (with all other HDD disconnected during install). Each OS then has its own boot sector. There is no W10 selector screen - OS is selected by choosing HDD at boot with F key, and any OS can be the default. W10 fast start has to be off in this scenario. The 'official' way uses the W10 selection screen with fast start on. Take your pick.

While it would be nice to use the method with two hard drives as you stated above, the computer I'm using is a SFF optiplex 760. There is only one hard drive slot available.
While the metro bootloader as you say doesn't cause the chkdsk to occur, it also does not allow me to use win 7 as the default. Doing so cause win 7 to boot automatically.

Is ticking off the fast start in win 10 power options useless? Is that why chkdsk still occurs on win 7 with metro bootloader disabled?

From what you are saying, there is no point in doing dual boots since any data on partition shared will be damaged sooner or later. Might as well have two comps with different OSes. There's no point in getting such a tray for the comp since there are only two sata ports, of which one is being used by the disc drive, and only one normal sata power supply.

sigh... looks like there's really no way to have the dual boot configured as i would like.

I ran into that after installing Win 10 and not disabling fast startup.
Then Win 7 ran a chkdsk every time i booted it.

I disabled fast startup in Win 10.
I restored a Win 7 image from before installing Win 10.
So basically i never booted Win 7 with Win 10 fast startup enabled.
Win 7 doesn't run a chkdsk.

This is a triple boot PC with all OS's on a single SSD.
The only primary partition is the Win 8.1 partition with the bootloader.

2 multi-boot PC's
Mainly HTPC/Office/Gen purpose (no gaming).
Trendnet USB KVM.
LG DVD burner/Blue Ray Player.
Tray system for removable SATA backup drives.

Not currently OCd, under-volted.
I use Hybrid sleep, rarely re-boot or shutdown.

Hauppauge HD-PVR, Avermedia PCIe TV Tuner, Hauppauge PCI TV Tuner.
I use a front installed hard drive tray (SATA) to boot my system from multiple Windows operating systems (Windows 7, 8.1, 10) on different SSDs. They all use the other data disks installed in the computer.
Once Fast startup was turned off in Windows 8.1 and 10, I have never had the system run Chkdsk.
