Solved Chkdsk runs at every under a particular condition.

Configuration according to Win 7 Disk Management:

Disk 0 931.51GB GPT contains Drives D: F: and S: all Primary NTFS partitions (HDD)
Disk 1 111.79MB MBR contains System Reserved and C:Win7Sys.. (SSD)

This configuration is my normal, day to day setup.

Occasionally I want to run Win 10 so I disconnect Disk 1 and connect another SSD containing Windows 10. The configuration now looks like this according to Wi10 Disk Management.

Disk 0 Same as above
Disk 1 117.79MB MBR contains System Reserved and C:Win10Sys (SSD_


I change BIOS at boot to boot to whichever Disk1 is connected. One is an Intel and the Other is Kingston.

The switch from the Win7 SSD to the Win10 SSD goes without a hitch. However when I disconnect the Win 10 drive and reconnect the Win 7 drive, the system performs a Chkdsck on every partition, C:, D: F: and S:.

Does anyone know why this happens and what I can do to stop it?

This is caused by having Fast Startup enabled in Windows 10. Windows 10 (Windows 8 also) shuts down in a hibernate like mode which leaves the hard drives in a state that Windows 7 does not understand so it runs chkdsk.

Disable fast startup in Windows 10.
