Choppy Sounds

Hi, I'm new here and I'm having a problem with my sounds.

I just installed Windows 7 RC 7100 64 bit last night and after I got everything installed today, I noticed songs that are being played in Winamp get a bit choppy when I'm browsing in Firefox (such as scrolling).

My laptop:
ASUS G1
Intel 945PM Chipset
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.00GHz T7200 667MHz FSB 4MB L2 Cache
Nvidia GeForce Go 7700 512mb (in DxDiag, it shows Approx. Total Memory: 1720 MB; I'm guessing it's using my rams also for additional memory, is this common?)
Realtek intergrated sound
4GB Ram

I am using Xtreme-G 182.06m Vista64 drivers. Looking at the Windows Update, I see an update titled, "nVidia - Display - NVIDIA GeForce Go 7700." Should I download this one instead of using my old one? Would this one be better?

Earlier today, I uninstalled the driver for my sound that windows installed for me. After that, I went and downloaded the latest drivers from the realtek website (June 5th, 2009) and installed it. I still noticed the sounds being choppy.

I had this problem in vista 32bit aswell, so I went back to xp pro sp3. I'm hoping for a solution.

Hi JasonLee, welcome to the forums.

There's no harm in letting Windows Update download the drivers it finds and seeing if that helps. Did you install the drivers with compatability for Vista? Sometimes this can help as Windows 7 is still not on the production line just yet.

I just let windows update it and still the choppyness after restarting. I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers under vista compatibility.

Edit:
After I uninstalled it and restarted, it went back to standard vga and the songs did not get choppy at all. After I installed the driver from tweakforce under vista sp1 compatibility, it did get choppy again. I'm not sure how I would be able to install the ones downloaded by windows update under vista compatibility. Any tips?

It's strange that in Standard VGA the sound fixes itself. I'll try and do some digging but i can't promise anything at this stage.

Since I couldn't get this fixed, I decided to go back to xp pro sp3. The problem seems to be with the video card drivers. I've tried those from Nvidia, Windows Update, Laptop2go, and tweakforce.

Hi and welcome. There are several threads here abt realtek drivers and choppy sound. First thing I would suggest is to read them to find out if your audio card (or driver) is a problem. Go find the newest driver for your audio card. You might also want to put your system specs in user cp it would help us diagnose things faster. Do you know how to search for the topics? At the top of every page there is a search button that pulls down and enter the realtek setup in your system. You could also google it to see if there are known problems between win 7 and realtek.

If you need help after that just reply and someone will pick it up and help you

Last night, I decided to give windows 7 another chance and still the same problem. If anyone wonders, I managed to fix it with an older video card driver: 97.54 Nvidia ForceWare Drivers for 64-bit Vista.

UPDATE:
I was using the 97.54 Nvidia ForceWare Drivers for 64bit vista and it was working fine with no aero themes (no more sound distortion).

After playing for awhile (wanting more up to date drivers), I decided to try the ones that were giving me a hard time. I found out that when I turn on aero themes, the sound distortion goes away, but when I have it off, the sound distortion comes back.

In the end, I'm loving windows 7 now

After re-installing, updating realtek drivers directly from the realtek, and even doing a clean install, I found out my choppy sound issue was fixed by changing the options in the nvidia control panel to not use the monitors built in scaling but to use nvidia scaling, and no more choppy sound when playing games or watching HD vids! Awesome, I couldn't find a answer to my issue online so I posted my fix here. Good Luck!

This seems to be a working temporary fix for me, with almost the exact issue, where it sounds like my sound starts to corrupt itself. For whenever sound goes choppy / does weird repeat/echo thing. End Process Audiodg.exe in process manager and it'll automatically restart, fixed. at least in my case. (Windows 7)
