Chrome freezes for a minute when loading a site in new tab

Hey there.

This doesn't happen every time I open a new tab, but on certain occasions. It seems really random, so I'm not sure if there's a specific trigger for it, but when I click on a link that opens in another tab, it'll lock the whole laptop for about a minute and then beep two or three times after that minute and start working again. Sometimes it happens even when it's just loading a website by typing it in via the search bar.

Is there any reason for this happening? I'm pretty sure I have the latest version of Chrome as I've checked, and I've also cleaned my cache, history etc.

If anyone's got any advice, that'd be great!

Hello Microserfs,

Do you have many addons installed? You can check them by copying " chrome://extensions/ " in a new tab.

And when you go to the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete -> Start Task Manager) and right-click Chrome and select Go to process, how much Memory (fourth column) is it using?

Also, when you leave a browser like Chrome and FireFox running for a long time, it will become very slow and it will do as you described, so do you leave Chrome running for a long time? If so, restart it once in a while to speed it up.

In regards to extensions, I literally only have one running (just Pin it) and one disabled (the AVG Safeguard toolbar). Other than that I have nothing else.

In terms of memory, it keeps jumping around, but there seem to be two from time to time and one is adding up to 147,352K, is this a lot? The other seems to be at around 22K


And this can literally happen when I've not even had it running that long, so I'm not sure it's to do with that, but I'll try to restart it from time to time.

Hello Microserfs,

First off, good move disabeling the AVG toolbar (see here and here), but I recommend you to completely remove it (see here how).

When I start my browser, it starts at around 6.000K (this will be different for you), and the longer you have your browser running and actively use it, the more memory it will be using, and so, it will cause the freezes and slowness (using multiple extensions will also greatly bump it up).
I normally start getting freezes and slowness when my browser is using around 500.000k, but this will be different for you, as you are using a different browser and I have 2GB more memory then you.

Chrome treats each tab as a different process, so it's completely normal to see multiple entries there.

Hmm, the way you describe it, everything should be fine. The only thing I can think of for you to try, is to reinstall chrome to see if the problem stays.

I've removed the AVG toolbar from my Chrome completely, can't seem to find it anywhere to uninstall it though, but I'll have a better look later.

As for the amount of memory, do you mean RAM memory? I have 4GB RAM, but I don't know if that's what affects the amount allocated.

I guess the only thing I could do is to reinstall it - is there a way to do so without losing every bookmark I have? (sorry for the silly question, just I have really important stuff saved)

Yes I mean RAM, but I only meant that the amount will differ since I have 6GB and you have 4GB.
Have you looked at the link I posted in my previous comment regarding the AVG toolbar?

There are no silly questions, only silly answers. But yea, ofcourse there is a way. First, are you signed in to your Google account? If so, it will automatically restore the settings after a reinstall.
If you are not, simply uncheck the option Also delete browsing data during the uninstall of this version. And during the next installation, check Import browser data.

I have the same problem with Chrome freezing for a few moments when I visit some web sites. It sometimes even freezes the entire computer for a minute.

I don't have the answer, but I maybe have another clue. After it unfreezes if I go to the new tab and open the debug console I see literally hundreds of errors listed in the error log concerning the page. To get to the console go to the Tools/Developer Tools, then at the bottom of the screen click on second icon from left to show the console.

Rezzing since the solution that I found out that worked for me was to disable the Hardware Acceleration under the Settings Advance Menus, you need to restart Chrome for changes to take effect.
