Chrome OS to launch this fall

Google has announced that it expects the first Chrome OS netbooks to launch in late fall, with Sundar Pichai – head of the Chrome project – using Computex 2010 to narrow down the previous “second half of 2010″ window. As the search giant has hinted at previously, they plan on being careful in how Chrome OS is delivered; “We will be selective on how we come to market because we want to deliver a great user experience,” Pinchai said, “we’re thinking on both the hardware and software levels.”

Honestly, I think that ChromeOS is more of a threat to Linux than to Microsoft in the netbook market. Although, Windows 7 Starter is horrid, so I can see MS taking a hit as well.

I don't know all that much about it, but in my mind I think of it as another Linux distro. Add it to the collection.

I also was thinking that is more a Linux alternative that is less confusing to the normal user. If one only does web-work and gets along with the Google Office applications, that is fine.

But if someone wants to use MS Office (and there are good reasons to do so) this would not work as I beleive it is not capable of running windows software (unless it is browser software). but MS I believe also has a remote version of Office, which migth work in Chrome browser.

Probably more targeted towards netbooks that are not used for real applications or as desktop replacement.

There are several sites that have articles about the new Chrome OS, so if you are truly interested just Google "Google Chrome OS."

It is a Linux distro with Chrome browser as the key operating system. It will be based on a cloud style system where all the application are on the cloud. It will be fun to test, however, as those who have been on the Seven Forums for a while know I am not a cloud person nor will I ever be. Sorry the cloud is just another server system that can be hecked or go down.

Not too dissimilar to Mac OS...

But if someone wants to use MS Office (and there are good reasons to do so) this would not work as I beleive it is not capable of running windows software (unless it is browser software). but MS I believe also has a remote version of Office, which might work in Chrome browser.

I'm sure there will be 'some compatibility' but there will also be an eventual push to break away from Office /MS dominance completely.

If it is indeed cloud based, Google's attempt will be the first company to the niche market and the first arrival always gets to expand and then dictate further developmental precedents.

I really don't see Chrome OS going anywhere...
Although I see the cloud in the future, I don't think it is ready yet..(It's close ) but I have tried Chrome OS (the beta version) and the only thing I can do add documents, browse the web and that's really it...(Kinda boring) :huh:

and like other posters said before security is a really big issue with cloud based operating systems.

I agree. I think the Windows Starter is terrible. I would never buy a notebook or netbook with Windows Starter.

I haven't had the chance to use a netbook with Starter, so I have no idea what to expect from it. It's one thing to read a list of features compared between versions, and another to actually use it. Is it that horrible?

Yeah, it really is that horrible, especially if you aren't technologically impaired. When I bought my Eee PC, it came with Starter. I used it for about 10 minutes, and then threw Home Premium on to a flash drive and clean installed it.

Can't change the wallpaper, no DWM or Aero. Not that I installed custom themes or anything, but I do like to have a bit of variety, as you know from the destops thread. The lack of Aero alone was enough to make me upgrade.

It's loaded up with manufacturer crapware...HP runs much better for me than Starter did on my netbook...mainly, I think, because of the clean install.

Agreed. The OS software is nothing to be excited about it because like you said you are pretty much limited to internet usage and using the google documents stuff. IT's not really a true OS in itself - if it to were compete they would be featuring this on a much larger scale, but clearly with it's limitations the only thing I can Chrome OS being is something installed on public internet computers or on the netbook PCS.

I don't see the cloud going mainstream until HTML5, WebGL, and NaCl applications go mainstream.

Microsoft already has a web-based Word, PowerPoint, and Excel at docs.com.

I really hope its enough of a success for google to never release a product for windows again.

As stated here they are ditching windows in their offices and hopefully that will lead to them ditching windows altogether which will make your privacy on windows a lot more secure. If we can keep google products of mac's and pc's then that is perfect. Good riddance google

I dread the day you can't buy apps for your computer any more

I just spent a week in the Sierra's with my camera and laptop. Photographing all day then processing images on CS5 at night. How can I do that on a cloud computer with no internet connection for miles?

And even if there IS an internet connection the closest one was satellite, anyone wanna guess what the performance of using a CS5 like app to process 8 gigs of data a day over THAT is?

And of course ALL of that it music to the comm providers ears because we will all be paying THROUGH THE NOSE for net access JUST to use our computers.

Look what AT&T recently did to iPhone and iPad users... IS that what people REALLY want?

I hope I'm dead before that's my only choice
