Cisco VPN in Win7 64bit

Hey Guys,

So I know this topic has been posted before....and I've been doing some searching so I've already tried a few things:

1. Shrew VPN (Did NOT work, gave me a BSOD when I installed.)

2. Virtual XP (Does not work with my Core 2 Duo processor, damn Intel for not making every processor they made recently support this feature.)

3. VMWare (would really want to avoid this option.)


Is there anyone out there who possibly needs to use Cisco VPN that has gotten it to WORK in Windows 7 64-bit?

Any opinions / advice / thoughts, you guys have, would be greatly appreciated.

Sun VirtualBox is a great alternative to VMWare. I use VMWare at work extensively and use Sun VirtualBox at home.

I have the same problem, it works for me in XP Mode, but can't connect to network drives unless i'm in XP Mode. And this is bad, because I need to install UniGraphics NX5 which needs an connection to licence on the network drive, and it runs really bad inside the XP Mode.

So any help on getting a VPN connection working on y 64 bit? Tried Shrew = BSOD, NCP doesn't work, and can't download the AnyConnect software anyware, think I have to buy it to get it from Cisco. The IT guys on my University, is no help, they are saying there is no solution to this in any near future, even though more and more students are getting their hands on 64 bit laptops...

I have two PC's at work (a US university as it happens). My old desktop is a three year old Dell Precision 390 that runs XP 64bit and I use VMWare Server (as it lets you build your own VM's, unlike VM Player, which doesn't, as it only runs [i.e. PLAYS] a VM) to run the Cisco 32bit VPN software, so this is not a new situation.

My laptop - Dell Latitude E6500 - supports VPC (which is not the case for all PC's now) and have tried BOTH VMWare Server as well as Sun Virtual Box which is also free AND runs on PC's that do not support VPC. Wonder when MS will catch up with this and release a version of VPC for non-compatible hardware... They are hurting their own business for W7 upgrades if you ask me without it.... But then what do I know? I'm not on the board of MS....



(Cry because if I were, I could probably afford to buy whatever PC I liked).

In my personal situation I had better results with VMWare, but it varies on what combination of features works for you.

At work the last time we looked, the price for the Cisco 64bit VPN client was a LOT more than the 32bit one. This may have changed more recently, but as ever, if we can get away with paying less, we will. As a result, we are sticking with the 32bit version for now and using XP mode on PC's that can handle it. Those that cannot handle it are staying with Windows XP or running VMWare Server/Vbox.

This may really be the beginning of the end of "old" hardware or even the more recent CPU's that cannot support VPC mode under Windows 7. If users don't know to check, then - as has happened in the passed - this kind of 'enforced' evolution might produce a boost to hardware vendors... even if it only affects a few of us who HAVE to use or are stuck with 32bit apps for a while yet...

Oh yes, and as you say, there are a lot more people with PC's of 4, 6 and 8Gb now than used to be the case only a year ago, so there will need to be an adjustment towards more 64bit apps.
