Cisco VPN issues on Windows 7 Beta

Build 7000. Every version of Cisco VPN I install creates a bluescreen after reboot. I've ran the DNEupdate from citrix and tried the VPN client up to 5.0.04.xxxxxxxx. I've seen some postings in various places about this, but no fixes. Can someone help?

Hi, dblizz98, and welcome to the forums.

Have you tried installing them with Vista compatibility enabled? If you have a particular version that worked in Vista I'd try that version first....

I have installed three different versions in Vista compatibility mode as well as the DNEupdate. Each time it blue screens. It won't let me into safe mode. I have to use Last Known in order to get back into windows. Not sure where to go from here. I have seen a couple articles stating that the CiscoVPN works well on 7, but no idea how it was installed. I've seen more postings about it blue screening.

If anyone has seen this or is using the VPN, let me know please.

Thanks,

David

I'm having the same issue. I've only tried one Cisco VPN build, and it bluescreens on startup. Not sure how much longer I can use Windows 7 without being able to VPN into work.

I HAD thesame issue that all of you did...

I uninstalled my norton AntiVirus and after a reboot I installed the Cisco software again...

the 5.0.04.0300 build installed correctly and did not bluescreen after a reboot. I was also able to connect.

After all that, I re-installed the symantec software and not both of them still work

hope this helps !!!

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately for me I do not have Norton or any Antivirus installed just yet. As a matter of fact I don't have anything on there except the OS with updates and now Office2007.

Have you done anything with security or any permissions? I'm doing everything as Admin, but you never know.

Thanks again,

David

I ran the install of the cisco software as compatibility mode for vista.

I upgraded my windows vista into windows 7.... that might make a difference

I don't have any AV software installed either. Mine is a vanilla Windows 7 install (not upgrade). I think all I had installed was the Windows Home Server Connector and Firefox. I did not install in Vista compatibility mode though. I'm tempted to try.

Thanks,
Aaron

Ok, I located the exact version that Reich used and installed in Vista compatibility mode and it worked. If it matters, I also have UAC completely turned off. The installer complained once during the install and I chose to ignore it (apparently it wasn't fatal). No bluescreens, and the VPN connection to my office works.

Thanks Reich!!

my blue screen is a ndis.sys error. I've tried quite a bit here. If i install the vpn and then run it without rebooting, it works great! As soon as I reboot BAM....bluescreen.....

any other suggestions would be appreciated.

dblizz - have you checked which drivers you're using for your NIC? If you upgraded from the WDDM drivers to your OEM drivers, try reverting; if you *haven't* upgraded from WDDM drivers to OEM drivers, try doing that.

NDIS should be around for many NICs, but OEM drivers *may* not include them as it is considered (erroneously) as legacy....

Have a Broadcom NetXtreme. Upgraded from HP a bit ago. Same thing. My wireless nic driver is dated 10/08....so I'm not worried about that one. Not sure what could be trying to use NDIS.sys.

Yet, you should be - perhaps the included NDIS driver with that update is corrupted - try rolling back the drive to the W7 default driver and see if the VPN works (this is admittedly a long shot - but I am hoping that the that will replace your NDIS with a default copy as well. If not, I may just copy mine and send it over to ya....oh, wait, I have upgraded to my nVidia Ethernet drivers also, so that NDIS may not work for you....*if*, of course, they are not using standard generic NDIS drivers to begin with - which is what I suspect is happening here.)

Got it working. Here's what I had to do. Rollback my wireless driver. put another random ndis.sys in place. install the VPN. Boot up. Update the wireless driver. reboot. Put the Windows 7 ndis.sys in place and it works. Pretty weird.

Not sure if I understand why though.

Thanks for all your help.

as much as I figured - the driver was replacing the default NDIS driver which then caused your VPN to go stupid....

Hi Guys,

Got same problem with bluescreens and ndis.sys but unfortunately I can't rollback NIC drivers (using WDM). Any chance to drop ndis.sys on my PM?
Hope it will solve situation.

You may not need to rollback your drivers. just put another ndis.sys in place install the cisco, reboot and replace. try that.

Hi Dblizz98,

Hmm, ok so let's try once again.
1. Can't rollback my drivers, I'm using standard one included with Win7
2. Where I can find ndis.sys to replace?
3. When I will install Cisco VPN, after reboot, BSOD appears

Thanks for helping..

Mariv,

I have the exact same problem with you. I can't roll back my driver as well but from google, I found the ndis.sys file is in C:\Windows\System32\drivers.

I was successful with installing Cisco VPN client 5.0.04.0300 on a fresh new install of build 7000.

At first I failed, getting the NDIS.SYS bluescreen. I went into Repair boot, and reverted to the system state snapshot from before installing VPN, this recovered the computer.

Then I downloaded 5.0.04.0300 straight from Cisco. I started a CMD prompt as administrator -- press Windows key, type CMD, when search brings up CMD icon in the menu, right click it and Run As Administrator. Using this administrator CMD window I made a backup of the existing NDIS.SYS file -- but I didn't need it!
Then I used this Admin CMD prompt to start the VPN install. Installed, tested VPN before rebooting, it worked. Then I rebooted, which worked, and tested VPN again -- all OK.
