I got the civ 4 dvd (complete version.) I played in on my old pc (windows xp SP2) but now I bought a new one.
I can install it and play it no prob. But I want to play it with mods from civfanatics (did so on my old pc aswell) and that doesn't work. So I put the EXE under compatibility for XP(SP2) but then all of a sudden I get "please insert cd/dvd",
what can I do, to fix that?

hi xatharas, and welcome to sevenforums,

i think you will have much better luck and quicker results if you asked for help on the civfanatics forums.

(oh and off-topic - i wouldn't recommend civ 5 just yet - whiles it does have good bits, i feel it definitely needs some serious patching and expanding first.)

I really like Civ 5 :) But I never really played any of the others so nothing to compare to in that regard.

But I do agree, I have found numerous bugs in my time playing. Small ones, but annoying none-the-less.

Sorry ... not trying to hi-jack.

@xatharas

mickeys advice is likely the best option here.

I'm slightly confused by what you mean.

This is a legit copy, correct?

And you get this message only when running the mods? The regular game is fine?
Might want to try running in vista Compatability.

civ IV problem and forum problem

Ok since I can't reply to my previous post (it keeps asking to log in) but can make a new thread?!

It's a legit dvd civilization 4 complete (original + 2 expansions) and instalation goes perfectly. I can start the game in windows 7 but once I put it in compatibility mode (which is required to play the mods) the dvd isn't found anymore and so won't start (this is without any mods installed). I also tried to install it in a new folder instead of the standard program file, but to no avail, the problem remains.
I did ask on civfanatics already but got no answer sofar.

I bought the new pc for civ 5, but reading about it i decided to wait a while before buying it, until the first few patches are out. :p

...

totally hijacking the thread - ah well, i've played literally 1000s of hours since civ 2 came out waaay back in '96 - civs 3 and 4 added a lot to the game, civ 5 has taken a lot away, console-ifying to appeal to the 'masses'. they called it 'streamlining', but it's really 'dumbing down' - which seems to be the sad trend today in the pc gaming industry.

it's still a great game at core, but there used to be a lot more to do and think about (such as religion, espionage, better diplomacy, corporations, deeper tech tree, more sensible AI (both diplomatic and combat), individual city health, happiness, pollution , tax-rates etc etc.). the ui was a lot more polished too, with leonard nimoy doing the voice acting and nice little movies when building wonders and actually winning the game after quite a bit of effort.

i think the developers got rushed into releasing the game too soon (again a prevalent trend in the industry). i have hope for the future - once the modders get working, i'm sure it can only improve.

i also hope that we won't get charged too much for expansions that fix the game.

Ive heard many say the exact same thing.

I was thinking about picking up the Civ 4 Complete package from Steam. i like 5, but from what Im hearing I may like 4 even better.

Hmmm .. that or Napolean/Empire TW.

civ 4 with the expansions (warlords and beyond the sword) is a great sapper of your time. i hope you have a lot of it. :D

overall i would say that i prefer it to the total war games you mention, as i'm not a big fan of the firearm-type warfare in empire/napoleon - the hack-and-slash of medieval 2 was far more fun.

Another hijack of the thread... it took me all of 3 minutes to decide I don't like Civ 5. The game itself plays okay if you have the DX10 or 11 hardware and enough RAM but the UI sucks

As for the OP's question.. make sure the mod you're trying to use is applicable to the current version, and install them using the run as administrator option or windows will block them
