I currently have vista installed. I do not want to upgrade I want a clean install. But I want to install it on another hard drive. I have 3 hard drives connected using SATA. I want to keep all the files I have on the hard drive with vista (don't care about vista). Can I install win7 on the other hard drive? Also the HDD I want to install it on is now called "H" will it be called "C" after I install win7 and boot in win 7? Do I need to change the order of the HDDs?
When installing Windows 7 (from the DVD) you can select a 'Custom Install' and then choose which HD to install onto. Once finished, you will have boot options for both Vista & Windows 7, alowing for copying or usage of the files on the other HD.
You can, later (type MSCONFIG into the Start Menu), delete the Vista selection from the 'Boot' tab.
1, No you don't need to change the order of them
2, Once booted, the OS determines that the HD that it booted from is 'C' then it works from Primary Master through to Secondary Slave...
E.G.
If your 'H' drive is currently Secondary Master
Then it would/should work like this...
Secondary Master = C
Primary Master = D
Primary Slave = E
Secondary Slave = F
Any CD/DVD Drives will be labeled after the HDs have been taken care of
If you want to keep the choice of booting into Vista, discard what has been said about deleting Vista from msconfig, but you can still go there and set Windows 7 as default OS to boot to.
