Have you click on Drive Options (Advanced)?

If not, do so and you should be given the option to create a new partition.

Windows will offer to create a 100MB system reserved partition for the master boot record and a partition for Windows.

Select the larger partition, click Next and Windows should begin installing.

type list disk at the prompt in that black window.

Post a screen shot of the result or at least tell us what then comes up.

Here is a screen shot that comes up on my PC when i type list disk and hit enter key:

Is Disk 1 the HD drive you are installing Windows to?
As your spec's list only one HD drive, which would be Disk 0.

You likely had a Dynamic disk converted when you added one too many partitions and ignored a warning. Clean command will change it back.

Hopefully you selected the correct HD. It would be best to have the others unplugged during install. Clean All takes about an hour per 320gb and sometimes longer. As long as the cursor is flashing it is working.

Then close the Command box, click Install now, use Custom install>Drive options to partition as you wish, or just click Next and installer will do it for you.

If it fails, unplug all other HD's and peripherals, reset BIOS to optimized defaults. Set SATA controller to AHCI.

yes it's my only drive
i changed the number from 1 to 0 and am re-doing it
the drive is just under 500 gigs

This is the reason you List Disk, to see what the drive number is. Was it Disk0 or 1?

I don't know, so much information comes up
How would i take a screenshot if my laptop is all messed up and i'm trying to fix it?

Boot the Win7 DVD, select Custom Install, use drive options to create a 100gb partition, format it then click Next. What happens?

You can use a single partition covering all 500 GB. That partition would include both Windows and your data files.

Or you could make a partition of maybe 80 GB and put Window on that partition.

And then make another partition of the remaining 420 to contain your data.

Either way works. Your choice.
