Clean Windows 7 install, error 0x800745d

Hello,

I've been reading through all of the threads I can find listed that had this issue/error code associated with them and tried following the guids listed. I've tried using the disk that came with my computer and a usb iso that I created with another computer. Using both methods on several different HDDs is causing the same issue. I'm using the ASUS Maximus VII Hero. I was upgrading my primary OS HDD, that is the only thing that has changed with this install. Pretty much at a lose right now for what to try any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

With the proper Windows 7 media and proper COA key this tutorial is what I use to do a Clean Install.

Thank you for the response and the link. I've actually attempted to use this same guide already today with the same results as earlier. SSD is seen I create the partition and then get the same error once the windows install starts.

Exactly what Windows 7 medial are you using and where and how did you get it?

Are you trying to install Win 7 with a OEM media that came with a computer on a different computer?

I'm installing from a disk provided with my computer originally when I had it built. Ive since changed out all the hardware except the harddrive until today. So yes I guess it is essentially a different computer. I also went to thr microsoft website and used my code to create a boot usb with the iso from there. Could this be what is giving me problems?

If Windows 7 is anything other than a Retail version that is not going to work.
Once you have changed the motherboard you will need to buy Windows 7 with a matching
COA key.

OEM, OEM Builders or OEM/SLP is only legally good on the first computer (motherboard) it was installed and activated on.

In what part of installation it gives the error?
Please explain the steps you followed to get the error.
I've made a search and fond that the error 0x800745d is related to "can't write to target".
Connect the target HDD to port 0 (fist one) and disconnect all other drives from your MB and place the USB installation disk on a USB 2 port.

If you finish installation and it doesn't activate, call Microsoft and explain that your MB has failed and that you replaced with a new one. They may give you an new license.

So as I said I tried to follow the guide posted earlier in the thread. Ive tried using the dvd that came with the computer and I've also tried to create a boot usb from microsoft website. The install fails everytime during the expanding files portion of the install. Im able to see the drive, partition it the way it is supposed to be and it copies the files. However it gets to about 5-6% of expanding files and then gets the error listed. The ssd definitely works as Im able to use it as a secondary drive. However as soon as it is formated and attempted to have windows installed to it I get the error.

How big is your SSD?
Try again following this steps:



Connect the target SSD to port 0 (fist one) and disconnect all other drives from your MB and place the USB installation disk on a USB 2 port.


BIOS configurations:
- SATA=AHCI (or RAID if you intend to use RAID)

- OS=Other
- Storage Boot and PCI device to UEFI only
- XHCI Hand off to disabled


Boot your installation on UEFI mode, go to install, custom, advanced, delete all partitions, create a new one (Win will create 3 partitions) and proceed.

Sounds to me as if the media is corrupt,
OR more likely you have another external drive connected, remove it.
Install W7 on your primary DRIVE (SSD?), UNPLUG anything else apart from mouse/keyboard.

SSD is 500GB

I attempted all of the recommended steps from Megahertz07, I have only been running the drive in port 0 with nothing else connected as I encountered issues like that in past builds. Unfortunately after the recommended changes to bios still getting the same error during the expanding windows files portion of the install. Verified nothing but the USB, Mouse, and keyboard are plugged in. Really thinking if it is finally time for me to upgrade to W10.

Any other suggestions to get this working on this SSD would be much appreciated, love all the assistance I'm getting in here so far.

Have you downloaded a fresh iso file and created a new installer yet ?

If you have a dvd drive, that is the easiest method you can try.

Yes, I tried with the dvd and I have tried a fresh iso file multiple times all with the same results.

When you begin the installation, does it ask for a driver?
Is your SSD a M.2 drive?

Do to the fact that tens of millions of computers run Windows 7 on ssd's makes me think that either the media or methods or maybe both is the problem.

I'm not sure what you mean about it being M.2 and no it does not ask for drivers and I can see thr drive no issue. It even creates all 3 of the partitions correctlly when instillstion begins. LazyBear I currently have W7 running on my previous ssd. The issue is thr fact that I have used the media in question to clean install before. Not to mention the boot usb was created following the exact steps recommended here. Lastly the new ssd in question has zero issues when being used for just typical storage, it only starts having issues when I attempt install of windows.
My methods have been to follow the exact steps recommended here and in the guides on these forums. Could it still be a bad ssd even though it works fine when not trying to have W7 installed as boot drive?

Did you boot your installation on UEFI mode, deleted all partitions, created a new one (Win will create 3 partitions) and proceeded.?
As you said that the SSD was used for data, it could have been formatted in MBR and not in UEFI - GPT mode.

It's also important that on BIOS:
- SATA=AHCI (or RAID if you intend to use RAID)
- OS=Other
- Storage Boot and PCI device to UEFI only
- XHCI Hand off to disabled

Yes, I saw you posted those suggestions earlier and was met with the same error. I made sure to delete all partitions and create new during the install process. All settings were copied with what you suggested also.
