What OS was installed on the computer before?

Fill out System Specs from User CP so we know what your hardware is.

Where did your friend get the source to burn the DVD from? You can try downloading a legal copy with SP1 integrated from here:

Windows 7 Direct Download Links

Make sure you get the same version you have, Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate and 32 or 64 bit. Note that Basic or Starter is not available.

I recommend using ImgBurn at 4X speed (or the slowest available) to create the DVD from the downloaded .iso file.

You can do this on any computer capable of burning a DVD.

YOU MUST HAVE A VALID KEY TO INSTALL THIS .ISO. The one on the COA sticker on your computer will work.

You can also create a bootable USB Flash drive (4GB or larger) to install Windows 7 from.

  1. Download and run Universal USB Installer – Easy as 1 2 3
  2. Select Windows 7 from the first drop down list, all the way to the bottom
  3. Select the downloaded Windows 7 iso file
  4. Select your USB flash drive
  5. Click Create

For techies or folks who work on computers: Create Windows 7 Universal ISO With All Editions Selection On Install with ei.cfg Removal Utility.
This will fit on a 6GB flash drive or can be burned to a DVD.

My previous OS was Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit, same version i am trying to install
Not exactly sure what info is needed from specs but i'll try my best

My friend said he doesn't remember where he got the copy from. I also tried creating a partition from a guide on this site using diskpart to see if that might help and it got a bit further (would crash at around 10% before and made it to 60 something this time) but while making the partition for the "Windows 7" 100gb space it crashed at around 40% but still showed up when i rebooted and tried to install the OS again. This got me thinking that since it doesn't just shut off during installation is it possible that my pc is overheating? seeing how it doesn't completely turn off or at least the power button doesn't.

BTW thanks for the reply ill try your suggestion after i find my USB

You guys were right it was a bad burn, spent so much time looking for other fixes thinking the burn was perfect. USB booting took a bit to figure out with the BIOS priority and all and installed windows 7 twice by accident because i forgot to remove the usb while it rebooted. only thing that worried me was that the shut downs happened like 3 times with the USB boot as well but it seems to be running smoothly now. Thanks a lot guys ill be sure to rep each of you.
