Clearing computer name before getting image of system

Hi,

I need to create an image of a system with many applications installed on it, but before that, I need to clear JUST the computer name. So after I deploy the image to another PC it'll ask JUST for the computer name (no change in domain, users, etc.)

I tried with sysprep but it's clearing more than I want, and clearing some settings that I don't want to touch on my image. Tried to change the computer name in the registry, with no luck.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

It would probably be best to change your computer name before you create an image. By doing that you can be sure that everything works properly beforehand.

It'll be the main image to deploy on many computers and for future deploys. Every setting is fine on the image, but the PC name. It'll cause duplicate PC name on AD.

We have an image doing exactly what I mean, but with different softwares. After deploying the image, on first startup, it'll ask for just the computer name.

I believe SysPrep is your only option since the PC name cannot be blanked for imaging any other way I know of.
