Hi there, new to the forums and thought I'd ask this question since I can't seem to find any real answer on here via search or on Google.

My computer tower has begun recently making a "clicking" noise on Restart/Shutdown and I am having trouble finding out if it is my HDD or my PSU making the noise.

The weird problem is, it doesn't make the click noise on a fresh install of Windows 7, and also does not make the noise when I installed Ubuntu linux as a test.

It only starts making the click noise on a restart/shutdown after installing Windows updates.

Other than that, my PSU and HDD both perform as if they were brand new. I am having no power issues, and my HDD is reading/writing perfectly fine and has passed both diagnostics and surface checks.

EDIT: I seem to have found the culprit, it was a faulty and outdated AMD SATA controller driver provided by Windows update. Installed 11.4 AHCI SATA controller and the clicking has now stopped.

Just for reference, is it a hardware clicking sound or a clicking sound through the speakers?

Hardware clicking. Did a more advanced search on this forum and found out what the problem was (Google failed me, and first searches on this forum failed me too..).

It was the old and outdated AMD SATA controller provided by Windows update that was causing my HDD actuator arm to not properly park itself on shutdown, thus creating the click sounds. Newer drivers fixed it.
