My favorite is the one that is part of the Window 7 OS. System Image, it copies to your hard drive or to an external hard drive.
Macrium Reflex, which is free has be suggested by many in this forum

Acronis has all been praised, but it is not free. There is, however a few months free trial period.

As far as I know, Windows 7 imaging/backup capability does not include cloning capability. Other programs, including Acronis, do include it. Cloning typically means copying a system from one hard drive to another in the same PC--directly, without an intervening image. Cloning might be used when you buy a larger hard drive and just want to move Windows to it.

I just don't feel safe without having a fairly recent clone as a backup, precisely because there is no need to "restore" a clone. Thus, with clones, one thing that can and sometimes does go wrong, is eliminated from the recovery process.

That said, I also do compressed system images that do need to be restored to be used to recover from a disaster because they can be so easily scheduled and automatically created without any user intervention once the initial parameters and scheduling have been set up.

Reminds me I'm overdue to make a new clone asap.

i just got the free editions of reflect and paragon because i'm having nothing but problems with the 2010 home edition of acronis true image. the snapshot won't behave properly, even with the updated snapapi.dll. it already failed to recover a partition backup and i can't afford for it to happen again. i don't remember having these issues in xp pro.

i just did a successful disc image of my 7 x64 partition with reflect so i'll have acronis stopped and on manual until the issue is fixed properly (apparently i'm not the only one running into issues similar to mine, as well as other things.)

whatever your choice is, hope it works for you

For cloning, if you want to make your life real easy, use this program. If you do not want to spend the $19.95 and want to invest more time, try free Paragon.

If you just want to move individual partitions, you can use any imaging program.

If it is a laptop, you need an external enclosure/Sata attachment in both cases.

I have been looking at this software

Hello *******,

Thank you for contacting Acronis Customer Central. My name is Vishal.

I understand that you wish to know about booting your machine without entering any Windows 7 Serial number using the Cloned hard disk on your machine.

I have completely understood your query and will answer it to your complete satisfaction.

*******, you can use Acronis True Image Home 2011 and clone your internal hard disk to a larger hard disk.

Then, you can boot with the Cloned hard disk on your machine and it will not ask for the Windows 7 Activation Key and it will be able to load Windows Operating System normally & you will be able to use installed programs/applications under it.

You may refer to the following knolwedgebase article link for instructions about Cloning Basic Disks in Acronis True Image Home 2011:-

Acronis True Image Home 2011: Cloning Basic Disks | Knowledge Base

Please let me know, if you have any other questions. I will leave your case open until you confirm the issue is resolved. I look forward to your response.

Regards,

Vishal Vij

Yes--if you have either a Western Digital or Seagate hard drive. You can download the free version from the support area of those 2 company websites.

You might take a look at "Disk Wizard (Acronis based)" from Seagate if you have a seagate disk in your PC.... (it checks to see if you have one installed)...
| Seagate

or

if you have a Western Digital drive you can use
"Acronis True Image for Western Digital"
