Solved Cloned to a larger hard drive, but not seeing more free space

I was able to sucessfully clone my HDD, and am typing this post on my newly installed HDD.

But if i click on the drive properties, the capcacity still says 277 GB. What do i need to do so windows will recognize that I have a 1 TB drive?

If i have to do partitions, I will. But Id much rather keep everything as 1 continuous C drive.

Look into Disk Management. You will find a lot of unallocated space that you can add to your C. Right click on C > Extend Volume.

If you are not sure what you are looking at, post a picture of Disk Management and we'll have a look.

The option to extend volume is greyed out. Im seeing my unallocated space, but i cant extend the C drive.

I did a google & apparently, i cant extend the C drive b/c my recovery drive (Q) is next to the unallocated space. Do I have any options or choices here? I remember when i restored in XP, that it automatically detected my larger space without having to resize anything.

I know this is risky, but do I really need a recovery partition? I cloned my drive, so if I keep that drive unused, in a dust free enviornment, couldnt that be my recovery?

Im not sure what else I can try. If I do go that route, do I just delete the volume?

No, nothing to do with 'active'. The problem is that the unallocated space is not directly adjacent to the right of C.

The solution is the bootable CD of Partition Wizard. Download the .iso from the last box on this website and burn that to CD (e.g. with ImgBurn). Then boot the PC with that CD and follow this tutorial.

What can I do if I dont have a CD/DVD drive? Are there any programs that I can boot from a thumb drive? Or are there any regular partion managers I can use while logged into windows?

In lieu of a CD, you can also create a flash drive.

Boot partition manager from USB Flash disk directly to manage disk partition - Partition Wizard Bootable Flash Drive.

Problem solved. For people having this same issue, this is what I did
1. go to Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition. & download/install the freeware version of this program
2. When you open the program, click on "partition wizard"
3. Click on the recovery partition, or whatever partition between the unallocated space & the partition you want to extend.
4. Click move/resize & a pop-up box will appear
5. Slide the little slider all the way to the right.
a. "unallocated space after" should decrease all the way to zero.
6. Click apply and let the magic happen. It took about 5 minutes on my laptop for the partition to move.
7. At this point, you'll return to the main screen, and you;ll see your C drive, then unallocated space, then the moved partition
8. close the program and click the start menu.
9. Search for computer management, and click that icon
10. In the window that pops up, you'll see "disk management" under "storage"
11. Right click on your C drive and click extend.
12. I just had to click "ok" all the way through
13. You should now be the proud owner of a much bigger C; drive.

I followed these same instructions on a Windows 10 laptop and the UI may have changed a little since they were posted. Regardless, it was easy to follow them and it did it so quick and easy it was great.
