Cloning issue or something else?

I bought an ex-lease HP Elite 8000 as a replacement desktop, bought an SSD and extra RAM to bring it into the 21st Century. I then cloned the original HDD onto the SSD, booted up and all was good in the world. The system recognised the extra RAM and it is currently taking 30 secs from cold to ready to work.

The problem I'm having is that I am unable to run Windows updates. I updated a whole pile of DLLs that were missing (there could be more) and the computer is operating just fine. The only issue seems to be that when I click on 'Windows Updates' it just sits there as if it is searching for updates it might need. No progress bar, just the appearance it is doing something.

Anyone have any thoughts? This computer is not for me, as I might be inclined to just live with it, but as it stands I am building it for someone else and would like the peace of mind to give it away all working normally.

Hello and welcome ginger mate there is and has been for some time a lot of problems with downloading updates and personally I have found some days it is like your situation and then out of the blue the next boot will pop up there are updates ready.
Just how have you got the updates set to go I set mine like in the pic.

If you are around, as what ICIT2LOL recommended is no problem.
If that someone else is staying far away, this is the problem.

I did used this options, but having a lot of problem to identify which updates to install.
After using for a few years, i made the big change.

On the same page as shown by ICIT2LOL i change the option to;

"Install updates automatically (recommended)"
On this option, there are certain thing that you need to let that someone else know.

Install new updates: Everyday at 3.00 AM
For this to take effect, this computer need to be switch on, which is using the computer regularly.
Leave the "Everyday" but for the time, it need to take note is that during this time, mostly this computer is switch on.
But it is not necessary to be everyday to switch on and wait for the updates.
Maybe at least once a week or fortnightly, even once a month.
Missing &or not received and download to install, windows will know, this should not be an issue.

Recommended updates: tick (Yes) Give me recommended updates .....
This is mostly for important updates, such as, mostly for protection &or bugs, etc.

Who can install updates: tick (Yes) Allow all users to install .....
This is also required, as windows will be able to check.


I have being monitoring for few years, which i do not encountered any problem on windows.

I do have 2 different type of antivirus install on my this laptop.
1. Panda Internet Security. This is active, meaning monitor and prevent for any known virus/malware website.
2. SUPERAntiSpyware. This is not active. It will auto update latest new virus, and only scan once a day.
There is this free version. The only difference is that mine is on auto mode, free is for user to do self-service.

All are done in the background, without any action by the user.



As now, you have 2 choices; that is ICIT2LOL or mine.

There may have many other choice if anyone post here.

We do not really recommended which choice.
That is to say, the Final Decision is yours.

Thanks guys for both of your suggestions. Unfortunately I am still looking at a screen that says it is looking for Windows Updates. I got all excited this morning when I turned the screen on to see that 21 updates were ready to install. Alas, it was not down to a manual search for updates. Not sure how it all took place but the events under the 'Checking for Updates' progress bar, says that I have "Never checked for updates".

The rest of the computer building went fine. The ex-lease computer has an OEM version of Windows and so won't build from a copy of Windows as the Product Key will appear invalid.

I shall continue my search.
