Closing the gap: Radeon HD 5830 due January 25th.

While NVIDIA is waiting to the Fermi architecture to go into mass production AMD is already up to a high tempo on the same market. Days from now it launch the first budget cards of the Radeon HD 5600 series, but by the end of the month, on January 25th, it will unveil a new addition to the Radeon HD 5800 series. AMD follows the scheme from the Radeon HD 4000 family and the card will be called Radeon HD 5830.

Exact specifications, as in the number of shader processors or clock frequencies, are still unclear. Our sources suggests that Radeon HD 5830 will use GDDR5 memory and offer performance on the line of AMD's Radeon HD 4890 card, but at a lower price.

We're guessing the design will be the same as the more powerful siblings, but even if the price hasn't been set it would be nice with a card from the Radeon HD 5800 series that costs less that $200. In a few weeks we will know more.

It looks like that ATI has decided to launch Radeon HD 5830 a bit later than we belived and the new date has been pushed all the way to February 5th.

The possible price is $239 and even though it doesn’t sound very attractive, it is still much better than $299 pricetag on Radeon HD 5850 cards or $289.99 with the recent USA price drops.

The card will end up with DirectX 11 support and will sit on top of Radeon HD 4770 generation, performance wise. The 5770 sells for $155 for the 1GB version but it will end up significantly slower than 5830.

We don’t know how many shaders they will cut out of the original RV870 chip, but we are working on it.

Delayed... Again:

Our friends all over the Far East are preparing to celebrate its biggest holiday that we know as Chinese New Year and this holiday can be held responsible for a lot of graphics delays.

Fermi is of course the major one that will suffer from it, but we just learned that this holiday will also delay the Radeon HD 5830.

We were told that these GPUs are going to be delayed to factories and that it won’t make it to China before February 10. At this time most factories are closed for the Chinese New Year and won't open their doors for anyone. This might delay the shipping until February 20th.

Without further words you can expect that Radeon HD 5830 will ship after this date and volume availability can probably be expected in March.

That's what I'm hearing.

The real issue here is gonna it's pricing.

If it's between $190-$210 (Radeon HD 4890-money), it's gonna sell like crazy. But if it's closer to the mid $200s then.... I much rather go for a 5850 to be perfectly honest with you (If I was in the market for a 5830, which I'm not since I just ordered a Radeon HD 5770 a couple of days ago).

My 4890 is still going strong - only 650MHz on the core? No, if I upgrade it will be a 5870. As an aside, would a 5870 fit in an Antec Two Hundred? I have less then 3cm of free space horizontally right now with my 4890.

Radeon HD 5830 Specifications and Priced Revealed:

The card is based on AMD's Cypress LE core, used in HD 5850 cards, but it features fewer shaders, 1280 instead of 1440 on the HD 5850. It also has 60 texture units compared to 72 on the HD 5850. All in all it doesn't sound like AMD crippled it too much and we can assume it will still pack quite a punch. The GPU clock is apparently set at 750MHz, which is 25MHz faster than the reference HD 5850. The higher clock comes as a surprise, but bear in mind that these are unofficial specs and we're taking them with a grain of salt.

According to an early EU listing, the card should cost around €215, but once again this is an unofficial figure. We guess it could easily drop below the €200 psychological barrier, but even if it doesn't it still sounds like a very tempting deal. An average HD 5850 will set you back around €250, so the €215 price tag sounds quite reasonable.

€200 = ~$270.

Even with overclocking to identical clock speeds it will not be the same. Most likely it will have less SPUs, texture units and ROPs. Most likely it will not have 256-bit GDDR5 as well. Maybe 128-bit GDDR5 or 256-bit GDDR3.

When I saw that rumor about the specs and pricing for the 5830, I had to cringe. If they were to release it at $270, what would be the point of buying a 5830? You can get a 5850 for that price in a good sale. So I relegate this to the rumor bin till something more official pops up.

this would work in CFX with the 5970 im assuming, this could be a great addition to an already fast rig.....for pennies

the 5830 core wold drop to 735mhz instead of 750mhz.

but the RAM on the 5970 would have to drop from 1010hz to 1000mhz.

these slight changes will make no difference as i'll then have 4,480 SP's churning through GFX calculations...

if nothing else, you gotta love ATI's pricing on mid to low range cards.

An early listing of the card, according to Fudzilla, indicates that the GPU will be available for €215, but that will certainly change once the card gets its official debut. That could be around March, with the cards expected to ship later this month.

ATI has really been flooding the mid-low range market lately but i have to wonder if having so many cards avaible in the same series set won't cause confusion and hurt them. i have enjoyed that they are getting back into the high end market as well but i would like to see some more work put into the crossfire platform.

Is that 1GB GDDR5 128-bit or 256-bit? It doesn't say and that makes a major difference.
