Cloud Computing

There was a rather long discussion on this in the News section I believe. We keep repeating concerns:

security - can o' worms
data accessibility - 1000% guarantee you can get access to your data
network quality - how consistent and reliable can it be from location to location?
cost/pricing - pay more to only rent programs, mobile device/service pricing could see potential rise

Eventually it'll be the way things are, it seems enevitable. And if security is 100% and if bandwidth is 10x what it is now (both directions) and compeltely unlimited AND is completely/universally acessable from any device anywhere at any time... well then, how nice all the proposed benefits will be. Till then... it's going to be a LONG and ROUGH road.

don't count on it being fair - that goes against developing capitalistic principles of "Everything comes at a cost"

I think Cloud Computing is only available because we "Can" Do it not because everyone wants it

With some improvements it could be better but not at the moment

Remote computing? Been doing it for years...

I don't know how things like photobucket and the like are considered cloud computing, it's just web data storage.

Right now it looks like "Cloud Computing" is just a new term to make something old sound new.

For business it is a good method, this has been going on for many years.
One company I worked for had a private commercial intranet in 1985, believe it was recognized as the first.

This has many useful aspects and is good as long as the Company has full control over the Company data.

For private use, a little data storage is all I use, web storage for pictures and a few files I want to share with someone.
I prefer to keep my personal files and data within arm's reach, for access and security.

Inevitably many people will use it, then complain when their personal data, files, records, are lost or stolen.

As always your personal safety and security primarily depends on only you.

Still room for Improvement in many areas.

There's always room for improvement, but I still use it with some extra security precautions. Some of my free favourites I'm using are:
dropbox + TrueCrypt (2-10GB),
windows-live-skydrive (25GB),
ADrive (50GB)
