CMD 'batch file' no longer performs in Win7 Ultimate (32bit)

For over a year, double clicking 'file.cmd' would trigger the correct response. Now, a double-click merely opens it in a text editor. When I try to change the file association, I find that "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is greyed out, with an indelible/irremovable tick for a text editor. I need two things : 1. How to reverse the greying out and 2. What program to recommend to run the CMD.

The file you require is listed as cmd and is for Windows command script files.

Thank you so much - your remedy worked perfectly.
I posted this question in 5 forums. Yours was the first reply received, as well as being 'correct'.

I might add that when I checked the 'new' file association, it was listed as 'unknown application'. I have since changed that to Windows Command Processor, and hope it STAYS functional.
