Greetings,

On my Windows 7 64-bit PC the cmd.exe file is missing under the /system32 folder probably due to a infection. I cannot reach the command prompt via start menu, run dialogue, system32 folder and task manager. How can I restore it? Could someone post the cmd.exe file on their system if possible?

Have you run sfc /scannow ?
If so, post the results - any error messages and numbers showing.

C:\Windows\system32 is a hard link.

On my Windows 7 Pro X64 system, it's:

C:\Windows\System32>fsutil hardlink list "C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe"

\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-commandprompt_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.
17514_none_e932cc2c30fc13b0\cmd.exe

\Windows\System32\cmd.exe
If you have a cmd.exe in the same \Windows\winsxs path then try this:

Open a Elevated Command Prompt and use fsutil to re-create the hardlink:

C:\Users\rrkurtz>fsutil hardlink create /?
Usage : fsutil hardlink create <new filename> <existing filename>
Eg : fsutil hardlink create c:\foo.txt c:\bar.txt
fsutil hardlink create \Windows\System32\cmd.exe
\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-commandprompt_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.
17514_none_e932cc2c30fc13b0\cmd.exe

All the above is on one line.

Your post #1 and post #6 seem to contradict each other.

When typing in the Search off of the Start Orb (cmd), do you or do you not get (cmd.exe)?

The OP "cannot reach the command prompt via start menu, run dialogue, system32 folder and task manager."

What I'm trying to find out is, can the OP forget the run box and just type in (cmd) in the Search programs and files off of the Start Orb.

You can open a Command Prompt from Windows Explorer by navigating to the hardlink target I posted above and running cmd.exe from there.

I just did this on my Win 7 Pro X64 from here:

C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-commandprompt_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_e932cc2c30fc13b0\cmd.exe

Then run

fsutil hardlink create \Windows\System32\cmd.exe
\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-commandprompt_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.
17514_none_e932cc2c30fc13b0\cmd.exe

from that Command Prompt to recreate the hardlink in system32.
