I can run cmd.exe from c:\windows\system32 without a problem. However if I run a shortcut pointing to c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe it doesn't appear on the screen or under applications in Task Manager. Although it is listed under processes on Task Manager.

Is there not a shortcut to Command in your Start Menu under Accessories? You might try copying THAT shortcut and Pasting it where ever it is you want it. I usually open sessions from the Run dialogue box... Not exactly sure what you are trying to do here.

Must say, if I navigate to the System32 folder I can double click the EXE and a command window opens... And it contains the modifications I set as default.

I don't seem to get this issue on Windows 7 or Windows 8.

If i Right Click >> Create Shortcut >> Paste C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe into the location >> Click Next and give it a name.

When i double click it i get the black command windows open as normal.

Regards,
Jamie

That's how I discovered this anomaly - the shortcut under accessories ie. it doesn't work.

No. The only difference is the UAC prompt appears. However the user interface does not appear.

My working shortcut from the Start Menu -

Target: %windir%\system32\cmd.exe
Start in: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

My user account IS an Administrator account. Beyond checking the Target and Start in under the shortcut's properties, I am not sure what else I can suggest.

Have you tied opening a command window from the Start Menu, Run dialogue box? Windows Button + R, CMD.

Yes - that works. Still would like to know why a shortcut doesn't though.

Curious. And the properties of your Start Menu shortcut match those above?

I'm afraid I am stumped.
