CMOS Bad Checksum

When I restart my computer it always goes to a screen that says CMOS BAD CHECKSUM then I press F1 to start the computer. I have to update my date and time and then everything seems to work fine. But when I click the arrow on the right side of my toolbar it just shows white spaces and I cant use that area not even the volume. Also Microsoft essentials will not work then recently Windows update stopped working. My computer seems to run slower in general. I don't think its a virus since this all started while my computer wasn't connected to the internet. I also replaced the battery on the motherboard.

When you say you updated the date & time, was it in Windows or in the Bios setup after replacing the MB battery ?

I just change the date and time on the clock at the bottom of the screen otherwise most websites will not work.

Then you need to set it correctly to your Date & time zone in the Bios setup, then save it & exit to reboot.

How do I do that? Sorry I dont know a whole lot about computers.

Also when I said I have to update my date and time I meant just the clock on the taskbar. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

When you first power on the computer, try tapping the F2 key several times to see if you can get into what is the Bios setup. Then look for a setting that allows you to set the current date & time. Then look for the setting to save & exit.

k I did that and my clock is keeping the time and also the task bar area is working now. But Microsoft Essentials and Windows update are still not working. When I go to windows update and click check for updates it says "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not currently running. You may need to restart your computer." I tried restarting but it still doesn't work.

Ok, we might have the date & time fixed. Did you get the CheckSum error notice when you rebooted ?

What settings do you have Windows Update set for ? Automatic or Download & notify or let me choose ?

I restarted again and now its updating just fine.
