In the 1980's I went to a local college and took a course in COBOL programing. I never used it in actual practice. It was to just become more familiar with computers. Is COBOL still around today?

My first professional coding was in Cobol on Mainframes, and also did some MicroFocus Cobol on AT Class PCs.

I seem to recall at one point that someone actually marketed an object oriented Cobol, but I never saw it.

A free Cobol compiler (GNU) if you want to brush up...

There are others.

Also, in a quick search, it looks like object oriented Cobol made it into the 2002 standard So any modern Cobol compiler should be capable object oriented programming.

Thanks to all of you for the info. == As far as the compiler goes, I think I prefer looking at my Certificate of Completion for the course that is hanging on the wall in front of me, rather than trying to "brush up" and find out how much I have forgotten.

Me too... Even though I wrote quite a bit years ago, I think I could possibly stumble through some existing code, but I doubt that I would remember enough keywords and sections etc to make anything that could be compiled.

Although I am tempted to try one of the free compilers just to see how object orientation is handled. I have no idea how they would make the changes. Of course, I'm guessing C programmers would have had the same thoughts about C++ before looking at it.

I took Cobol in college and helped the computer lab at the time install and deploy an object oriented graphical cobol application....but that was quite a number of years ago now..so I don't remember much.
