I get the pop up message whenever my computer is taxed (running a bunch of programs all compatible with the new graphics) that tells me my computer apears to be running slowly and the color scheme will be changed to win basic. It then changes and stays that way until next reboot...
I would like to turn this off....

Any ideas how to fix my issue?

Thanks for the tip, I actually started there... That thread has info on software causing the issue, my issue happens when I run a lot of Programs, and is a different issue. Any ideas how to fix my issue?

Dont worry , pal ! It is simply a normal issue. A few games, few Adobe, Corel or Autodesk programs automatically changes to basic color scheme to run properly. Coz those programs are resource hungry, need more memory to run properly, otherwise crash your computer.

When you close those programs , you will be automatically back to aero.

I am not sure , but hope some high end graphics cards with huge memory can prevent those .

Nope, that's not it...

Like I said it runs all my programs fine, then while using say outlook 2007 or Fireworks CS4, I'll get a message that says "Your computer appears to be running slowly..." then it drops the video to basic.... nothing but a re-boot gets it back... and, it was NOT running slow.... In fact I can run those two programs and MANY more and it never gets slow... I have a really fast machine:

5.9 experience Index
dual quad cores at 3.07GHz
9 gb ram
64 bit win 7 ultimate
plenty of HD space...

So, it's definitely not a software issue, it's not a resource issue... can anyone tell me how to turn off this auto switch to basic???

Thanks in advance!

It's resource issue, Ron ! A few programs are there which can't run simultaneously with aero . I am experiencing this issue from the very first day I was using vista ... It was ulead video studio which shut down aero automatically for me for the first time :D

Mine gives me the message after running some games. It appears the system thinks it is needing to reduce video capability because something has triggered some minimum standard for video.

I have not bothered to look for a way to turn it off. But I am running 1920x1080 with a Nvidia GTX 480 video card with 7.8 on the index. For all I know right now, since the game/s seem to want a lower graphics settings, the game or utility is triggering the message.

I see...

I also have a program or two which each and every time I start them the video drops to basic and as soon as I close them it instantly returns to aero... I didn't mention that because that's a different issue and certainly due to software/resource incompatabilities.
But this issue is different, almost like the program (say outlook 2007) is working fine with aero and windows has decided that by whatever benchmark that my computer is running slow (and it's not inky case) so it drops to basic.... By the way, when I seethe message I can click on theballoon and chhose an option to keep aero and it does keep it. It's just anoying to do that several times an hour...
That's why I think there must be a way to overide this, as I can keep aero all day by just dismissing the message over and over...

I hope there may/might be a registry edit to do that .... If it is known to anybody, please make us know :D

I was having the same issue and this is what worked for me to stop that from happening. Go into Control Panel and click on Performance information and tools (you might have to do a search from your start menu for Performance information and tools). Click on Adjust visual effects and choose Adjust for best appearance. I hope this helps.

In systems with aero, dwm.exe process can get very resource hungry. Instead of crashing because of memory exhaustion, Windows automatically shutdown/suspend the dwm process. If the change stayed until reboot, then maybe there was a memory leak in your system.
