Just wondered what will exactly happen to windows 7 on PC's does it just uninstall itself or something, or wipe your whole hard drive :(? what if you don't have a other OS to boot to... I myself have XP installed on a seperate hard drive, so I can switch back to that anytime.

Swarfega, I've heard both sides; 1) can't install over Build 7000 and 2) upgrade path from the Beta version.

I hope you're right; it would eliminate the need to reinstall your programs.

You can upgrade to future builds, but once the final release is available you will be required to do a fresh install of the final product or upgrade from Vista, you will not be able to keep this installation after August 1 so make sure you don't have it as your only OS.

The best solution is to dual boot with Vista, so when the time comes you can transfer any files from your Windows 7 partition over to Vista and then simply upgrade Vista to Windows 7 when the Final release hits the stores.

I agree Mr GriM, I wouldn't expected that you would install the released version over the RC version of Win7. I would probably perform a clean install but I haven't decided yet. I like the idea of a clean install, but the hassle of reloading the programs.

Currently I do have dual boot with Vista. I don't have all my programs installed on Win 7, e.g. financial, I did it that way just to be safe.

Thanks for the clarification.

I think the question was more like "How the BETA will stop working on August 1-st, what will happen to it"

Hi,

The more than likely scenario will be that the Beta will go into reduced functionality mode on July 1st to allow you a month to save any files then on August 1st it will simply refuse to boot at all.

This will hopefully not be an issue as the RC should be out by then - still it is always a good idea not to rely on any Beta software as your only OS - what if someone has coded the "timebomb date" incorrectly.

The minimum I would recommend is that you at least store your data on a separate drive or partition.

i want to put my two cents in this in that like the longhorn betas the OS will just stop functioning...
you can of course access your data at any time but the OS supposedly wont function...
i was actually thinking of testing it today (mainly because im long overdue for a reinstall and i need a clean slate to work with since i try software all the time...)
