Solved Comments on NAS choice

Hi,

This is my first foray into NAS. I have been doing some reasearch and have decided that the Thecus N2200 offers what I need for an entry level storage server (to date I have been relying on USB drives).

I'll probably configure it in a RAID1 array with 2 x 1.5TB Samsungs since this will primarily be used for backup and storage. I might also use it as a photo server (as opposed to having all our family photo's scattered across few computers despite my attempts at educating the family on the merits of networking and Libraries).

Has anyone any experience with this model? Care to offer any critisim/comments/insights or general suggestions, even general NAS commentary and tips?

I do not have any experience with this model directly, I would suggest looking for web reviews from a trusted source. Newegg, tiger direct, toms hardware, hard-forums.

Thanks. I've read a few reviews - as an entry level NAS it seems quite popular. For the hardcore networkers it is probably a bit limited. Seeing as I am in the former, I'll go ahead with it and post some feedback when its up and running.

Let me know I have been looking for a good nas. I got me a new laptop so I need me a good storage device I can share via my VPN and not have to have my main machine powered on.

Update:

The NAS is installed and is working as expected.

Pro's:
Good price AUS$199
RAID0,1, JBOD options (I'm using RAID1)
Compact design, very, very quiet.
Options for setting up HTTP server and Itunes/media streaming server
Automatic rebuild of RAID works as advertised (one of the first options I tested)
Configurable to add a USB printer and share as network printer
Configurable to turn ON/OFF automatically
Good option for beginner simply wanting network storage/backup/sharing facility (good bang for buck)

Cons:
Browser interface is very clunky and slow (about 5 secs for each page to load or refresh, so setting up takes some time).
Rebuild of 1TB RAID1 takes about 8 hours
Doesn't support LLTD so can't be placed into Windows Network Map
Expert networkers will hate it

All in all, a good choice for reasonably cheap network storage. Advanced networking gurus would get frustrated with its clunky interface very quickly.

The LLTD is a MAJOR con though
I'm sure I could rig it up via my dial in server, but I would prefer a direct ip access in case my servers get hacked again.
