Ultimate is for business networking. That's the extra "crap" you are seeing. I have Ultimate; but I don't need it. It was a gift and I darn sure wasn't gonna turn it down. :D

Hi Brink, What are those added features in Ultimate, and what is the benefit against the Pro Edition? :

-Aero Glass Remoting
-Audio Recording over Terminal Services
-Branche Cache Distributed Cache.

For the rest of added features i'm Ok...but those ones i do not see really the meaning.

Thanks to you all.

Brink can certainly answer better but seeing he's offline now I can give you this link to a MS website to find out some information about those extra features in Ultimate / Entrerprise editions you mentioned: 'Unique technology for enterprise customers".

Hello NoN,

While I have never used these features myself that I know of, these links can also help give you some more details about what they are. :)
Hope this helps,

Hi Brink, What are those added features in Ultimate, and what is the benefit against the Pro Edition? :

-Aero Glass Remoting
-Audio Recording over Terminal Services
-Branche Cache Distributed Cache.

For the rest of added features i'm Ok...but those ones i do not see really the meaning.

Thanks to you all.

Hello NoN,

While I have never used these features myself that I know of, these links can also help give you some more details about what they are. :)
Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks for those link!:) will have a read yet!

EDIT (interresting reading):

Well, the first link is like for most of virtual machine PC...as it do not apply to my processor yet!

The second link, i partially remember it on XP for the RDP session in WMP.

BrandCache DC looks usefull for sharing files through corporation networks...over a special tunneling connection.

I'm amaze that the difference of price when you could do a "Windows Anytime Upgrade" choose, to Pro or Ultimate from a Home Premium based, is so lite.

I mean, it is not even $14,00 usd!!!

But many features in Ultimate looks too high techy saavy!

Thanks!

It's true most users do not need extra features of Ultimate / Enterprise. For me the Bitlocker was, and is, a must also in my private computers. I swap an external HD between private and work rigs, carry it always with me and it is essential to me to be sure nobody else has access to it.

Also because of my multilingual living and working conditions I need Ultimate / Enterprise, so for me it was clear which edition to install, on all of my rigs.

Well, If i would upgrade i think it will be "Pro" even if i know Ultimate will be such affordable...

Acer did provide in his bloatware the Non-Free for free (no trial here) Win Locker 3.0 with 4gigs cached partition. So one point i would not worry about. And in another hand i've got encryption tools on my portable hdd 2,5"...

I would need only a quater of this list in Pro Edition but they're the best i can find:

Features added from Premium to Pro:

-AppLocker (only create)
-Backup to Network
-Domain Join (Windows Server)
-Dynamic Disks
-Encrypting File System (EFS)
-Encrypting Offline Files
-Group Policy
-Language Pack (have to buy)
-Location Aware Printing
-Offline Files
-Presentation Mode
-Remote Desktop Host
-Software Restriction Policy
-Switch User
-System Image Backup (to network location)
-Windows Mobility Center (Presentation Mode)
-Windows Server Domain Joining (/Url)
-XP Mode (Windows Virtual PC).

I'm also afraid from "Ultimate Ed" because of securities issues if i do not control them...

During the RC time, i didn't overview some parts of Ultimate...now it is a good point having home premium to slowly re-learn some.

Hello Hikeman,

Ultimate and Enterprise are basically the same as far as features, but here are some of the main differences:
  • Enterprise is geared more for a corporation. Ultimate is geared more for the power user at home.
  • Enterprise uses volume licensing (1 key for many installations), and Ultimate doesn't (1 key per installation).
  • You cannot purchase Enterprise from a retail store (ex: Best Buy or Walmart), but you can with Ultimate.
  • Games are turned off by default in Enterprise, but can be turned on. Games are turned on by default in Ultimate.
You can look in the left pane of each user's post to see what edition of Windows 7 they are using.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
