I'm researching the many things that could cause me problems if I am to purchase a new PC with Windows 7 Pro X 64. I live by Outlook and I use 2007 because it syncs with the iPhone 4. If I can't make this work, then I won't buy a new computer now, but to be honest, I really want this to work.

(1) I've read many complaints elsewhere that Outlook 2007 doesn't run on the 64 bit Windows 7 Professional. Does anyone here have any experience with that?

(2) I'm not against buying a new Office 2010 with Outlook 2010 but...again from comments online, it doesn't seem to sync the iPhone 4 properly. Does anyone have any experience with that? And if there are problems, what might be the workarounds?

Thanks in advance for the info. I'm not about to buy a Mac because you pay over double for a lesser machine and besides, while I like the iPhone4, I prefer not to support Apple in their other products. (It's also a personal choice and issues with their management style and their attitude towards their customers, treating them like idiots.)

It's all good news I think :) First, Outlook 2007 does run without problems in the Windows 7 Pro 64-bit environment. It syncs with the iPhone 4 via iTunes too, so your contacts, calendar etc get copied across.

Second, I have recently upgraded from Office 2007 to Office 2010 and am now syncing that with my iPhone 4. It was glitchy for a while but a recent update of iTunes seems to have sorted it all out and it now works perfectly.

There certainly are many reports of syncing difficulties but these seem mainly to boil down to using a USB connection for the iPhone that plugs directly into your PC's motherboard, rather than going via a hub. Right now, Apple seem to finally have got iTunes fixed and it is at last capable of keeping your iPhone in sync without a lot of trouble-shooting :D

I can confirm that Office 2007 works fine with Windows 7 64-Bit.

However, if you decide to upgrade to Microsoft Office 2010, you'll be able to run it in either the x86 or the x64 version, with the caveat that the 64-bit version MAY experience functionality issues, although I haven't experienced any. (I use Office 2007 on my laptop and Office 2010 on my desktop).
