Hello...I just got a new laptop and I put virtualbox on it. I installed Windows XP and then preceded to upgrade to 7, because I only have the upgraded dvd. I get to point after I say Upgrade that appears a Compatibility Report message that states

'The computer started using the Windows installation disc. Remove the installation disc and restart your machine that so that windows starts normally. then insert the disc and select upgrade.'

I did that, restarted the OS on VB put the disc in and get to the XP desktop, and after changing the boot device and where to boot from I get that Windows cannot upgrade from here and to restart with the disc installed.

It is a loop that I cannot get myself out of. Am I missing a setting somewhere to upgrade from XP to 7 in VB? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

PS I tried a full install for fun and I did not get anywhere because my product key is for upgrade only.

I'm very confused as to what you are doing, and why VirtualBox is entering the equation. Is the XP to Windows 7 Upgrade taking place completely in VirtualBox (and the host OS is left alone)?

Anyway, I'm going to take a stab in the dark here and ask if you are entering the serial number during the Windows 7 install (when you try to do a clean, full install)? if so...don't. There's no reason to ever put a key in during the install. I have never read through the clean process guide, but I'd imagine it would instruct you to not enter your key.

I am leaving the host alone, I am running everything off of Ubuntu 10.10. But I figured out what actually was happening. I didn't change my boot device. I changed the boot device and put the dvd in and booted up and I was able to install it. Where I got lost was I thought I changed the boot device but somehow it reset itself to the non existent floppy drive.
