I only recently(Friday 15th may) installed windows 7 on one of my friends computers which had a 6200LE and a amd athlon xp 2000. His computer displayed aero without any problems at all so I would suggest your issue lies else where.

I can't see it being the drivers though because they ran it straight out of the box. Try updating though to see how you get on and let us know the score.

Currently nvidia cards seem to be having the least compatibility issues. But YMMV.

I'm thinking about to buy a nvidia geforce FX5500 AGP 256mb or GeForce FX5600XT 256MB AGP or nVidia GeForce 7600GS 512MB AGP or GeForce 6600GT 128 MB AGP or Radeon 9600 XT 256MB AGP. but I dunno which one of them will really work on windows 7.

The 7600 is the clear winner there, most of them seem worse than your current card.

Well a little more information on your problem would help mate, saying that it just doesn't work isn't really much help to rest of us trying to solve the problem.

The GeForce 6200 DOES support Aero with inbox drivers on Vista and 7, there's no reason why it shouldn't really. Its always best to get the latest ones however so here is a direct link to the 185.85 driver for Windows 7 x86 which is 100% compatible with that card.

GeForce/ION Driver Release 185

I myself have a GeForce 6200 series card in an older desktop and it works just fine with Aero using Windows 7's inbox drivers and those ones which I have just linked you to.

Take note that Aero will be not be selected by default if you are running on 512MB of RAM (Which is not recommended). You can just simply select it through the Personalization options however.

You might also want to post your system specs as they can be helpful too.

Just another bit of help, if you are considering opting for a new graphics card then there would be no point going for a GeForce 5 series one since you already have that 6 series card. Your best bet there AGP wise would be a 7 series like the 7600GS for example.

I posted this before but I guess I'll do it again:

GeForce FX 5200 or higher support Aero in Windows Vista and Windows 7

Radeon 9550 or higher support Aero in Windows Vista and Windows 7

Hope this helps and let us know how you get on! ;)

Never, ever buy any 'FX' card. EVER.

Go with ATI and if you need AGP, go with a ATI 3850, it can't be beat.

If he's into gaming I suppose, either that or he can pick up lower end AGP based Radeon 2000 and 3000 series cards and probably considerably cheaper than a 6 or 7 series GeForce too.

6200A-LE on 1.5 GHz P4 system, latest NVIDIA 7 driver. Works well for what it is. Now my main machine (in specs), yeah. That card really is awesome for AGP.

Hei, if only it was so simple :)

I have been through at least half-a-dozen drivers for my 6200 including the one above, but the only driver that works for me is 96.85_forceware_winvista_x86_international_whql.exe ref. another post.

Can't complain though, this is an old DIY system, which looked awful on XP, but really looks and works great on Windows 7 :)

I was just looking around for some cards, but yeah mate, I've unistalled my windows 7 and installed me old and good XP and installed the 185.85 driver and now im thinking about to instal this driver in the windows 7, the only problem that im thinking about is that when i instal the new driver the windows 7 may install the default driver instead of the new.

Yes the FX 5200 worked right out of the box on my old DIY system, but as soon as I upgraded to the latest Nvidia driver, being an old Nvidia fan, I lost the Aero capability.. I purchased a 6200, not many AGP cards around any more it seems, but the 6200 had similar problems with the latest driver, which Windows Update wanted it to use..

Eventually, I came across an old driver 96.85_forceware_winvista_x86_international_whql.exe which works on Aero OK. Search this site and you should turn it up..

So it seems Aero likes certain configurations better than others, but for an old machine, the 6200 will work. I haven't tried the 7600..

Here it is at Nvidia http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/winvista_x86_96.85_uk.html
The other good thing about the 6200 is passive cooling, i.e. no fan noise, which the 7600 would have..

Mine did with an old FX 5200 at first install, but I wanted NVidia, and that is when I found NVidia FX 5200 drivers didn't enable Aero.

So I upgraded to a 6200, which worked fine on the first run with MS driver IIRC, but not with the latest NVidia driver.. thats why I ended up with the 96.85 'Vista driver'.
