My old Medion computer was like a hover when it started up. Normal running was ok but when you started to do photo editing and video you really had to try to close you hearing down. It was supposed to be a Media computer. definately would not be any good in the living room. This one is nice and quiet, have to look at the lights to see if its running.

I'm a very big fan of quiet PC's. Back in the day when money was limited and I tried to build for the cheapest price possible, my machines were quite noisy. Then, I purchased a Dell for home which was very quiet. After getting used to having a powerful machine that was quiet...I was unwilling to accept a noisy PC.

For me, quiet PC's are the result of
#1). Quality cases and materials. Many of us here are fortunate to have nice cases, but they make a huge difference. My quietest cases are my Antec Sonata II's...but my Antec P182 is not much noiser. Also, the rubber grommets and such within the case dampening the hard drives and other case vibrations makes a significant difference.

#2). Quality power supplies. Again, many of us here are fortunate and have nice power supplies...but the fans in the cheapo PSU's are often the cause of much of the machine noise.

Coolers and the like can make an impact. But these are often necessary..especially when overclocking is being performed. For me, I like to stick with the stock cooling on my intel CPU's as it's very quiet...but it obviously does limit how far I can push the box.

Same here. :roflmao: Dumped my old xp machine. It was quite annoying. Took out the hardwares and kept them in the store to collect dust.:shock:

If I take out my two 120mm fans, my computer can't be heard. The corsair H50 and Radeon 5770 coolers and Corsair 750W HX power supply fans are all ultra quiet. I'm planning on replacing the fans in the future with some quieter ones.

I blast metal while I am at my computer, so I really don't care how loud it is. (Though I would be a little worried if it get louder with some grinding)

However, if I ever work on others computers I would take this into account. Good read, even if I just skimmed it (yay for pictures!)

You know that sound you hear in your ears after you've been hit in the head, that sounds like a long tone?, that's what I'm getting from my case right now, I'm not really bothered with the sound of the air flowing at all (Actually, I got used to it so much that I can't sleep anywhere unless I was hearing the sound of the fans in the same room), only just that tone, it's constant, doesn't stop whatsoever, driving me crazy especially since the case is like 10cms away from me..

It only started today after I purchased an OCZ 700W Fatal1ty PSU, the PSU itself doesn't make a sound whatsoever, but after I installed it, it was time to use all my fans since I couldn't run all of them with my old stock PSU..

Then you should test your fans one by one to see which is making the noise, and replace it. It will drive you nuts otherwise.

I know , I just installed that last 2 fans half an hour ago, will check the other 3 that the tone started with..
