Hello All,
My Win7 computer is having all sorts of problems, so much so that I am wondering how many issues are behind it. They have gradually grown over a long period of time.

The most visible symptoms are:

  • Icon corruption in the form of random icon overlays (like the 'shortcut' symbol, but for almost anything from a command box to a firewall symbol.)
  • Folders forget view settings and thumbnails
  • Newly added/moved files don't always show up in the folder
  • Explorer sometimes very slow to refresh, with the green progress indicator along the top of a window taking minutes to do the last 5 or 10%
  • Explorer often seems to use a lot of CPU even when not apparently doing anything.
Other things also seem to drive CPU up when I am not doing anything:

When I take a look at processes / task manager, and show processes from all users, I see MsMpEng.exe there (looking now its using 37% CPU, and varying around 80 Mb memory.)

After reading favourable reviews I bought and ran Auslogics BoostSpeed, which incorporates a registry fixer. It found literally thousands of registry errors, but the system was no different after I let it fix them. (I found online articles implicating registry issues for the forgetful folders)

I never get a full BSOD, (so no dumps), but it does sometimes freeze completely. By completely I mean that the display stays on, the mouse stops moving, no respose to any keyboard combination, if sound is playing the note hangs but keeps going. This happens every few days.

Things I have noticed about when it happens:

  • It happens if I am using the PC or not.
  • It is independent of temperature, (I had the temperature logging, and examined files after a crash).
  • I can spot no particular software activity that correlates with it.
  • I've tried disconnecting all sorts of USB devices in the hope of identifying one of them as the culprit, no luck.
  • It seems that if a crash happens when I am out , if I turn the monitor on when I get back there is no display. I'm not sure if this means the crash may be different from a lockup while I am using it, when the display remains active.
  • I have checked the system logs, there are no messages giving info, just something about restarting after an unexpected problem, (that's from memory, sorry I don't have the exact text to hand).
All clues very gratefully received,
Nick

Such programs should be avoid at all costs, they will cause more harm than anything else, keep in mind that those things never work as advertised. Such utilities can severely damage your system.

Perform a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html]System Restore and roll back any negative changes caused by that program

Those symptoms point to a possible malware infection, run a scan of Malwarebytes (Free Version)

Thanks for such a prompt response.

Malware bytes is running, I think it will take several hours at least.

I'm a bit nervous about the system restore, this will mean going back about 5 weeks - is there a danger of losing anything more recent if I do this?

Nick

Only programs installed during this period will be affected, else your personal stuff will be left untouched.

Oh, I did take action and clicked the button to remove them as soon as the scan finished!

Sorry, I should have said so explicitly.

I plan to let the memory test chug overnight tonight.
Thank You,
Nick

PS - I was also looking again at the way that MsMpEng.exe (Antimalware Service Exutable) seems to be so active. I found suggestions that this could happen when antivirus programs were not uninstalled fully, but this does not appear to be the case.

At this point you should try a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

MsMpEng.exe is related to Microsoft Security Essential/Windows Defender. It should normally use around 80MB. As far as Windows Defender is concerned you should disable it if you're using another Antivirus software.

Thank You - Lots or warnings in the instructions I see!

I think I need to do this one with a clear head rather than when I get back from work, so I'll put that back to the weekend. Fortunately I have a proper disk as I boiught one to install myself.

I had another lockup this morning, so its definitely not fixed yet.Its still forgetting folder settings, and messing up icon overlays, though that last one seems to come and go. Here's hoping the repair install does the trick!

For the MsMpEng.exe, I was more interested in the CPU it was using than the memory...

Thanks again for your help, very much appreciated.
Nick

A further short bereak for job interviews, now I am back on the case.

I started to follow the repair install instructions. My home premium box didn't mention SP1 so I assume it wasn't an SP1 version, and went to download the disk image for home premium as directed.

I followed the instructions, and after about 10 minutes checking, it informed me that:

Your current version of Windows is more recent than the version you are trying to upgrade to. Windows cannot complete the upgrade.
Not sure how to tackle this as it seems the freshly downloaded one should be more up to date than the disk I have...

Any suggestions for getting an up to date image to use in the upgrade install?

Thanks,
Nick

Try it a few more times as it may correct itself. An SP1 installer should work with Win7 SP1.

If not consider getting a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which steps are the same for retail.

If you stick with the tools and methods given you'll get and keep a perfect install.

Thanks fpr the suggestion. I really want to avoid a clean install as I have LOADS of programs installed.

Just in case I am missing something obvious, how do I tell if my W7 home premium, (I still have the box etc) incluides SP1?

Thanks,
Nick

It should say at the top on Control Panel>System.

If you don't have SP1 then you don't really have Win7 since SP1 is like a car engine overhaul = it becomes the car engine itself. There are so many performance updates that you may be suffering from lack of one or more.

The control panel shows SP1. What I meant though was the DISK, where it does not seem to say anything.

I figured that by getting the download, I'd be getting something up-to-date, (abd it did spend some time checking for updates when installing it checked for updates).

As said, maybe just try it again and hope it does something different?

The latest official downloads at Windows 7 official ISO downloads all have SP1.

It depends upon when you bought Win7 if it's disk contains SP1. See if it has the same code as you download from link above somewhere on the box. If not try it anyway.

I just tried running the uprade install 4 times in a row, and it still insists:

"Your current version of Windows is more recent than the version you are trying to upgrade to. Windows cannot complete the upgrade. "

It's definitely connected to the internet - judging by it downling the same anmount of data every time...

If its downloading the latest info I really don't understand why its not the newest possible...

Any ideas on what I else can try to make it do an upgrade install?

Where did you get this idea that the installer is downloading SP1 from the web during the Repair Install?

The minor installation updates being loaded from internet have nothing to do with having the latest official installer, which must be downloaded manually from the web from the link provided, burned to DVD or written to bootable flash stick using Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool.

Well, when it told it was updating, I assumed it was (sensibly) ensuring I had an up to date install!

Seemed reasonable to me...
