I am running Windows 7 Home. Has been perfect for years. I had Comodo Firewall, Malwarebytes (paid) Avast, and SAS.
A couple of days ago my Mouse, MS Intellimouse 3.0 starting acting strangely, it is a really old mouse so I bought a new one.
The new mouse is worse than the old one...no scroll, side buttons do not work although programmed correctly. Eventually the scroll wheel works but no side buttons.
Today, MMBAM Will not load protection, Avast will not load. I downloaded new versions and they will not work. I tried to use an Acronis backup, won't work. System restore won't work. I tried Running ESET and nothing
I finally got Windows Firewall to launch by starting FBB services Don't know why it was stopped.
Then I was able to use Avast and Malware Bytes and ESET.
No infections were reported.
Then I was unable to access many files due to not having permission, even though they all show I have full control. I poked around this forum and downloaded reg fix that put Take Ownership in my context menu.
Now it seems pretty normal but I am uneasy.
So I don't know if I am infected or what?

Thanks

MBAM (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware) already has anti-rootkit scanning built in to both the Free and Premium versions.
So, as long as "scan for rootkits" is enabled in the settings in both places (the "global" setting for both versions and the "advanced" scheduler settings for the Premium version), MBAM should already scan for rootkits.
(The scanning engines and anti-malware technology are the same for both versions; the differences between Free and Premium are: the realtime protection, the automated scheduler, the availability of the (superfluous) Hyper scan, etc.)

The standalone MBAR Beta (Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit Beta) is a separate, BETA tool designed to be used only with expert guidance, per the disclaimer HERE.
As such, it probably would not be the first tool to suggest for a "DIY" malware removal procedure.

<just a suggestion>

And a Win7/64 Pro laptop; And a Win10/64 Pro desktop.
OK I ticked MBAM to check for rootkits, the scan found nothing.
I appreciate the input.
