hello everyone iv been reading through all the posts here and someone was right about the reg key except the one posted here didnt work for me. my problem was Right click my Computer - manage- Loading circle for a sec then goes. Thats it, nothing. I added this key that i found somewhere else an it works just fine. I wish i knew the site which i got it from.

Anyway please by all means check it make sure its not malicious or anything ( If thats even possible from a reg key ) id imagine it could be. Anyway here it is but please be warned this isnt my key, i didnt find the solution i simply found a site with the solution.

This did it for me. Much nicer fix than having to copy in old Vista files, but thanks for all the efforts to resolve this, it was a PITA.

Hello everyone.. I can't believe I spend hours try to find the solution for this problem.
I found this, and start reading all the way, and Find out the solution at this problem.
I WANT TO GIVE THANKS TO TYSEYH FOR helping me find the solution to this problem. I don't know how happen, if the ccleaner 3.08 was the problem (I trust this software a lot) or something. However I thanks this member for his solution .. thanks again and thanks to Windows 7 forum.. great job

This is an old thread but just to let everyone know that on my machine with Win 7 Home Premium x64 with the exact same problem (right click Computer>manage - 1 sec working signal then nothing), Tyseyh's solution worked perfectly. Thank you very much!

'File does not have a program associated with it' message with right-click > Manage.

I joined this site today because I found a solution to a similar problem last night and wanted to share some good news only to find Brink's post above which deals with my problem perfectly. However, I will endorse that link provided by Brink and go on to post the same message I posted on the Microsoft Technet forum which surprisingly does not seem to be aware of this particular situation.

I too had the same problem and none of the causes described here were responsible but the .bat solution did provide what seems to be a slightly more efficient method for accessing mmc.exe than the original CompMngrLauncher.exe did.

However, I did discover what had happened in my case and was able to fix it. And the cause, and solution, of the problem came as some surprise to me.
Some tweaking software packages offer a way to remove the rather cheap looking shortcut arrows that appear on shortcuts created on the desktop by deleting two registry keys in 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

The deleted entries are: 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile\IsShortcut' which is supposed to remove the again cheap looking 'Shortcut To' that appears in new shortcuts and 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\IsShortcut' which removes the little arrow that appears on new shortcuts.

I found that by restoring the 'lnkfile' entry, the problem was solved.

Open 'Regedit.exe' and navigate to 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile'. There should be four entries under that key and one of them should be labelled 'IsShortcut'.
If 'IsShortcut' is not there then right-click in the right-hand pane and select 'New => String Value' then type "IsShortcut" (without the quotes) and enter.

And that's it. Go to the 'View' menu in 'Regedit', select 'Refresh' and then 'Right-Click => Manage' should work fine. It did for me and I was gobsmacked.

This problem doesn't occur on XP so I suspect that this is a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing in relation to the Windows 7 programming team. Which is kinda normal of course.

I hope that this is of some assistance to others out there who are having similar problems.

Same troubles here. None of the suggested solutions in this thread worked (except maybe TheVinesKid solution, but the mentioned attached file is no longer part of his post).
This workaround did it for me: Right Click Manage stops working.

In particular the suggestion to put
%SystemRoot%\system32\mmc.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\compmgmt.msc /s
in
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Manage\command]

yes yes yes yes yes ...that did it for me...replace the default data with %SystemRoot%\system32\mmc.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\compmgmt.msc /s in the registry key [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Manage\command]
And manage indeed works...

What is very weird is that the above in bold is not what the tutorial link says to do, however my issue is fixed soooooooooooo.........

PS: Go figure; you have to hack the registry simply to get the manage shortcut to work but its a nice hack...I did NOT have to do anything else....

Before I read tomvdp's solution, I found an alternate that worked as well. It was posted on the windows community site, and it worked when NO other solution worked. Specifically, I changed:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\Common Administrative Tools" setting=%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Tools & Utils\Admin Tools

Voila!

That is where I move all my tools to. As for many others, the manage link had worked until very recently, and I don't know what caused it to break, but I found the change above did the trick. I have also made the change tomvdp suggested, and that does not cause it not to work, so I'm going to leave both in place. We'll see what happens.

Problem is in Computer Management Launcher

I had the same problem and fixed it with a registry modification.
Go to the CLSID key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and find the computer icon key:

{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} Go to the sub-key shell\manage\command

Change the value of command from: %SystemRoot%\system32\CompMgmtLauncher.exe
to: mmc %SystemRoot%\system32\compmgmt.msc

This changes Manage right click to use the msc directly instead of calling the launcher.
Works every time!

Also repairs similar complaint that right clicking Manage brings up a window stating no program is associated with launcher.
