Every once and a while the screen will go black, and then the sound will cut out which is then followed by nothing being responsive. The caps and num lock dont register on the keyboard so i dont suspect that the video is going dead. Also, the computer wont work correctly until the computer hard resets. I just replaced the ram because it was being questionable. the only other thing i can think of it being is the psu or mobo.

this was something that only happened once a year, then twice and now quite regularly, which only adds to my thoughts of it being the psu. has anyone had any sort of experience with this? im really at a loss of where to look next, and any help is GREATLY appreciated.

@wish I dont suspect it to be windows, because it has happened in linux as well. also, it happens intermittently. however i updated the bios (never did it before now) in hopes that it could be the cause.

@David Ive sent my ram into gskill and they sent me some new ones so i dont suspect it to be the issue. Also not a lot of dust as a i clean it every couple months. The cpu is running in upper 30s idle and low 40s for load. ill do those tests you mentioned and report back.

thanks guys!

Sorry to say but, new RAM can fail.
Memtest86+ can indicate if the settings need adjustments.

You are trying to narrow down the hardware possibilities, this is best done by running the above tests.

OK here's the update. Still trying to find a psu to use to test with, however im not empty handed.

Ran Prime 95 for 4 hours for small ffts without error. I also ran the furmark and it topped out at 74c but hovered between 72-73c. No artifacts and still running.

Starting an overnight session of memtest 86, and im not sure if i was running the 32 or 64 version of prime95 so i might run that one again.

Ran 7 passes of memtest86+, no errors.

any specific test on prime 95 i need to run?

Edit:

Also wondering, could there be a ram setting in the bios that needs tweaking? Im just wondering if stability is an issue.

Also, this may or may not be a new symptom. The last time the computer crashed, the screen went a solid color and froze there. Not sure if that indicates the video for sure or what. Thanks!

How much RAM you have installed?
With some information we can see if any adjusting is required.

Download CPUZ and post a snip of the CPU, Mainboard, Memory, and SPD tabs.

For posting the information , enter 'Snipping tool' in the Start button > Search box, hit enter. Select the area you want to post and save to a convenient place.
How to Post a Screenshot in Seven Forums

Go to your BIOS and tell us what the CPU, RAM and North Bridge (NB) voltages are.

With 8GB RAM, four 2GB cards you will need a NB voltage bump.
It usually takes more voltage to run that amount of RAM and four cards.

Change the MCH Core from the current 1.200v to 1.300v.
If it crashes again bump it up to 1.350v.

Your DRAM is currently set to 2.000v, bump this to 2.100v.

If you still have crashes after bumping the MCH Core to 1.350v, then bump it to 1.400v and you may need to raise tRFC in Advanced Timing Control to 80.

Just go at one step at a time and test for stability using memtest86+ or Prime95 torture test.

First open Real Temp to monitor CPU temperatures, don't go over 77°C.
Open Prime95 and stop the test if it is running, in Advanced tab select 'Round off checking', in the Options tab select 'Torture Test...', in the window that opens select 'Blend', after 'Number of torture test threads to run' enter 2, then click OK to start the test.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
This shows max Tcase is 72.4°C add 5°C for CPU core max temp 77.4°C.

Ok, here's the update. THank you for being patient with me. So, i ran prime95 for an hour and everything passed (had to do work or wouldve gone longer) but while i was working it crashed. So I bumped up the voltage on the mch core to 1.3 and it was fine then crashed again. Then bumped it up again to 1.36 and the tRFC to 80. This morning was booted in xp and loaded up splinter cell and the video goes out. Only this time for a minute the music keeps playing. The caps lock was unresponsive but I heard xp make the sound for when you unplug something. THen the sound looped and i killed it. My guess is that the video is going out and causing a kernel panic. However whether it is the video or the psu i dont know for sure. thoughts?

Are you getting a BSoD?

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
Click OK until you're out.
Reboot if changes have been made.

Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions
Even if your not getting BSoDs, post the above information, this will help to find a cause.

Try and borrow a GPU and PSU to test with.

Well when it crashes I have to either hit the reset button on the front or hard reset if that helps. I haven't seen a bsod since I had the memory replaced. Next time it crashes i will post the dump and I ll try to get a gpu to test but might take a week or two.

Un-install Comodo Internet Security and Comodo System-Cleaner, both are causing errors and are not compatible with Win7.
Replace your virus protection with Microsoft Security Essentials and use the Window's Firewall for your firewall protection, for testing purposes.

Un-install Super AntiSpyware, it is incompatible.
Download and run Malwarebytes, be sure to update it before running.

GEARAspiWDM.sys, possibly from itunes, is incompatible. Un-install or find a newer version.

If your running Comodo System-Cleaner, it will delete your dump files.
Running a registry cleaner can delete vital files and stop important system services, when this happens it usually requires a OS clean install.
Un-install or do not run this again until your crash cause is found.

Remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%.
They use a driver, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.
Use this SPTD uninstaller when you're done to be sure it is removed: DuplexSecure - Downloads

You can use MagicDisc as an alternative.
