Computer crashes consecutively, no discernable pattern

My laptop keeps crashing at random times. It can be while I'm web browsing, watching a movie, or sometimes it crashes even while only the screen saver is running and no other program.

I find myself unable to run a full system scan for viruses, which takes too long and the computer crashes before it is done. I think it might be due to overheating, but I can't be certain. I think it usually runs about an hour (more or less) before it crashes.

A few weeks ago, it had a major crash where the startup recovery apparently failed to fix itself (?). After that, things seemed fine for a while and then, I kept having to install Windows updates pretty much every time the computer was on. When I stopped getting update notifications, that's when it started to repetitively crash. I thought I would apply a system recovery to an earlier restore point before all the updates and that's when I found that all the restore points had disappeared. Which I'm guessing happened when the startup recovery failed.
