My computer freezes when ever it plays games or occasionally videos. I have done tests on the cpu, ram and graphics. Everything works fine until the graphics gets to the PhysX test then the computer freezes. It isn't overheating because it only gets to around 53 degrees when it freezes and on non-PhysX tests I can get it over 75 degrees and still run smoothly. The computer was knocked off the desk so I am wondering if I may have damaged the motherboard or graphics card. I put my mates graphics card in to see if that would make a difference and it would freeze on simple things like internet browsing.
I have an intel I7-3820, an asus p9x79 motherboard, a Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 graphics card and 8gb of DDR3 1600mhz RAM.

Yeah I thought it was a problem with that to until I tried a different one and it worked even worse. Anyway anything that could be wrong will be under warrenty so I guess I will try one at a time.

Hi Scotty, do you have a single dimm of memory installed or 2*4 GB? If you have 2 dimms, try to run the PC with just one stick and then tell us. Sometimes the memtest does not show the memory error and we never come to know what exactly the issue is.

I tried with 1 stick and it works fine now. Cheers for that mate.

Ok update again. I have a feeling that it may be the CPU not being able to multi-task. The computer works fine on graphics tests, cpu load tests ram load tests but if I open up a few things that are using CPU at once it crashes out. Any ideas?

hmmm.....I see you have an i7 and I am pretty sure that it can multitask very easily. Have you overclocked your CPU? If yes, try to put it back to the original state. Also, can you let us know, if you ever got BSOD? If you are getting a BSOD, then it might be an issue with any of your hardware.

I haven't overclocked and I'm not getting a BSOD. I just played COD for a while and it didn't freeze. it would of frozen fairly quickly before the RAM replacment. All it does it freeze on the screen and doesn't get out of it.

So, you are able to run your games without any freeze? Try to run some more games (some heavy ones, which uses more RAM). Like this we can check if the RAM is working fine.

It still freezes on multi tasking just not on doing anything singularly. If you gave a way to test it between the cpu or the motherboard tell me or I will just make a guess and hope I'm right.

The most common cause of computer freezes is a corrupt registry.
Most likely your registry is bloated and overstuffed with an assortment of useless pieces of data. The operating system while running your computer has to pick its way through all this excess material. There will be bits of programs which were not completely uninstalled, parts of programs which were never completely installed, fragments of miscellaneous data, useless drivers, and a multitude of other bits and pieces.
The answer is to clean your registry and remove all the material which is not needed.

Get the best registry cleaner, and completely clean your windows registry.

Often there is also spyware which is using your computer for nefarious purposes and slowing its operation.
The answer is to scan your pc with a best anti-spyware to clean spyware/trojan/virus.

Used registry mechanic and scanned it through twice with Malware bytes and still doing it. Only way I can think of ruling out software is by reinstalling the OS.

Ok, with a brand new install of Windows 7 on the computer the problem is still there. Defiantly hardware issues. I'm guessing there isn't much more anyone else can do so I am just gonna mark this thread as solved.
