Solved Computer goes to sleep, but can't wake up.

I just installed a new HDD into my old Inspiron 15r n5010 laptop which I am giving to my sister for Christmas and took my old SSD out for my main computer. When I was testing the new HDD in my laptop, I would put it to sleep and when I try to wake it back up it did its little thing where it went to a lit black screen as it has always done, making me think that it is about to come on, but then it would shut down after about 15 seconds.

Anyone know anything about this? For now I guess I can just set it to never go to sleep as a temp solution :/

Are we talking about the "main computer" in which you installed the SSD? If so, was there another HDD in that system? When installing the SSD, assuming that it's the primary drive, did you reformat and reinstall the OS?

When changing out HDD's and other main hardware components, it's recommended to format and reinstall your OS so such problems don't occur. Sometimes users get lucky and dont see any ill effects from change main hardware pieces. It's happened to most of us....

The hardware I had just bought from newegg and it was completely brand new. I installed the OS on the new HDD for the first using the laptop.

Hi moneybagman,

If you are experiencing issues with the laptop resuming from the sleep, you may try flashing BIOS and updating the 'Video & Chip-set drivers'. You may find the following steps useful (Assuming that the laptop is loaded with Windows 7 64 bit Operating System):

1. Flash BIOS:
Note: Battery should have 10% or greater charge; Adapter should be connected; No external devices should be connected; All other programs should be closed and documents saved
- Click Driver Details | Dell United States to download the BIOS file and install it as per the on-screen instructions
- Laptop will restart itself (may produce some beeps); recheck results

2. If the issue persists, try installing 'Windows Updates': Ensure that the 'Logitech Mouse' is working with the laptop while you perform the update
- Click 'Start icon' > Type 'Windows Update' in 'Search programs and files' in the text box > Tap Enter and follow the on-screen instructions to install all updates > Restart the laptop and check results

3. If the issue still persists, update the 'video and chip-set drivers'
- Click Driver Details | Dell United States to download and install the latest 'Chip-set driver'
- Click Driver Details | Dell United States to download and install the 'Integrated graphics driver'
- Click Driver Details | Dell United States to download and install the 'Discreet Video Card' (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650, if shipped with the system)
Update each driver one by one; allow the laptop to restart if prompted.

4. If you still experience issues, try to 'Load BIOS defaults' to see if that works:
- Power off the laptop > Power it back on and at 'Dell splash screen' repeatedly tap 'F2 key' > Tap 'F9' to 'load BIOS defaults' > Tap 'F10' to 'Save and Exit'

Yeah, I had to install a newer video driver, the one it came with on the drivers disc was inadequate. Luckily I figured this out last might before I had to wrap the present, but yeah, you definitely know what you are taking about, that is exactly what was wrong. Thanks anyways

The other thing punters should know about

- is that in most cases you need to 'jumper' a couple of pins on your new hard drives to enable "wake from sleep!"
