How to Save Event Viewer Instructions

Log into the computer using an account with administrator rights. Some event logs may be inaccessible to you if you are logged into Windows using an account with limited privileges.

Select "Control Panel" from the Start menu. Click "Administrative Tools." Double-click "Event Viewer" to launch the Event Viewer utility.

Navigate to the specific event log you would like to save using the console tree located on the left-side of the Event Viewer window. Branches within the console tree contain specific event logs. To expand a branch of the console tree, click on the leftward pointing arrow located next to the branch name. To collapse a branch of the console tree, click on the downward facing arrow located next to the branch name. The Windows 7 Event Viewer console tree is generally organized as follows:

--Location Activity (log)
Windows Logs (branch)
--Application (log)
--Security (log)
--Setup (log)
--System (log)
--Forwarded Events (log)

Click on an event log to select it.

Go to the "Action" menu. Select "Save Events As."

Type the name you want to use for the saved event log file in the "File name" box. Open the "Save as type" drop-down menu to select the format in which you would like the log to be saved. For example, choose "*.txt" to save the log as a text document. Click "Save."

Repeat Steps 3 through 6 to save a different event log.

Close the Event Viewer.
