Hey guy's sorry if this is in the wrong place. I am new here and was curious if I could get someones opinion. I am running an Hp with win. 7. The computer was acting fine. Then all of a sudden It froze and rebooted to a black screen that says " Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in proper boot device then press any key". So I went to my Bios screen thinking my boot order may be out of whack. It wasn't. Then I noticed it didn't list my HDD OR My dvd burner. So I was thinking the hdd may have failed, but if it isn't listing the burner either could it be the sata controllers on the mother board?

Have you been inside the PC lately? Check for loose connections at both ends of the cables. While you're in there, check for dust build up and clean. (Not related to your problem.) Do you get any beep sounds when you try to boot? If so, count the beeps and report.

Hmmmmm. That's not a good sign. How old is the PC? Do you have another drive or PC that you test with?

The pc is about 5 years old. no computer to test with. I am just curious if it is the SATA controllers that went out. It isn't recognizing neither the hdd or the dvd burner. I have nothing listed in my bios in any of the empty slots

What is the exact model number of your PC? There were a rash of failing SATA controllers on HP motherboards. The most notorious seems to be the M2N78-LA motherboard. Check to see if you can find a model number on the motherboard. A new disk won't help. With both the HDD and DVD not recognized, I'm afraid the motherboard may be toast.

Replace the SATA cable and if the same thing happens again, most probably it'll list out the DVD Burner. If not, i strongly suspect that the mobo is failed and you may need to purchase a new one.

What I've found about the error you mentioned previously is, HDD is failing or about to die and you'll need to purchase a new one of same make and model. The full post is here: Error Code BIOHD-2 During Hard Drive Test No Drives Detected - HP Support Forum - 2685713

You could try clearing CMOS memory and try to reboot again. This will force the BIOS to re-evaluate hardware. If that doesn't work, you may have to take the PC (or just the drive) to a service center or friend and have them test the HDD. If the drive is good, at least you can recover data, but the controller is probably dead.

Open your CPU case and keep your spy eye on its connection mechanism. I've my PC hard drive and DVD drive connected through different cables. Consider checking the same in your case and see if you would needed two different cables for that.

Just a thought.
Unhook you power and data cables from the DVD player and try to boot. The DVD might have a short in it discombobulating the signal to the Hard Drive.

Another thing. Your screenshot says "Memory bank 1...Not installed". You could try swapping the first memory stick with the last and try a boot. Be careful of static electricity when you do this.
