Computer problems

Hi all

Recently my computer has had a few occurrences of system_service_exception bsod errors. So today I decided to format the computer.

I went into to bios to check the settings and changed hard drive type from IDE to RAID in configure sata type as option, even though I do not have raided drives currently (I thought it would be faster than ACHI).

Since then the computer comes on when I press the power switch but turns itself off again after 2 or 3 seconds.

Im guessing its that setting I changed so I have the battery out atm and am waiting the stated 1 hour before putting it back in.

Do you guys agree this is the reason for this problem?

yeah it was set to achi mode before.

Latest is when I turn it on first time, it immediately powers down. When I try a second time it lasts 2 or 3 seconds before it powers down. So I wonder whether its the front power switch shorting or a faulty psu.

have you taken out and reinserted all ram modules and cards?

may as well replug all sata/ide cables whilst you're at it? :huh:

no bios beeping i take it?

all fans spinning ok? heatsinks not loose or wobbly?

You say it was set to ide and did you get the reformat complete, and can you still get into the bios if not reformatted yet. If you can get into the bios set it back to were it was tht happened to me when I changed my setting in the bios to achi or raid.

The change should not have made a difference unless you were going from RAID to IDE. The change just tells different hardware to process the requests. The drives should have still worked normally.

I have had the same issue a couple of times on one PC I built. I took out the memory chips and the Gfx card and re-inserted them and the issue went away.

I had another issue with an earlier model and it was a $5 fan which took out the Gfx card and MB. It would take ages to start continually going from on to off and not booting. It would finally boot and be okay for the day. Replacing the Gfx card and MB fixed that issue but now the power supply is failing. heaps of continuous beeps at start up but once I finall manage to get it started it goes well. New PS on its way tomorrow.

Has not been a good month for me.

It does appear like its some fault with the psu. I shall take the case back to the repair shop and Im hoping that the work they did 2 years ago is still under guarantee.

Ive had the computer back from the repair shop yesterday. They suspected that the cpu cooler was shorting the mobo so they have replaced the Tuniq Tower with a Scythe Mugen II.

I formatted windows when I got it home but unfortunately Im still getting the same bsod error on files win32k.sys and cdd.dll. I have ran memtest86 and the ram passed all the tests. What other tests can I do to eliminate other hardware?

cdd.dll is the 'canonical display driver'

can you try swapping out the graphics card? or even trying older/different drivers?

Yes it was formatted then installed.

I have done loads of searches on google, results raging from paged pool memory issues, ram, video drivers. I do have my old nvidia 9800GTX card I could slap in.

Unfortunately I deleted the 10.5 driver. Is there someplace I can get it from?

Ive also removed all the creative drivers and disabled the x-fi and using the onboard sound for now.

It only seems to happen when alt-tabbing out of a game or bringing a program like WMC from fullscreen to windowed.


Ive ran memtest86 which passed the ram and also sfc/scannow which found some corrupted files:

Ok today I disabled the sound card, and rolled back the video driver to 10.5 but still getting bsod. Its while in WMC, I switch between a few channels on tv, maximise the window and then restore the window. Its on restoring the window when the bsod occurs.

i'm out of ideas. old ati drivers can be found here.

it does seem like a graphics card problem.

again, i'm speculating, but have you run any stress tests on it? i use kombuster for this, available as part of the msi afterburner package.

Ok found the cause of the bsodding. Its an old 2008 monitor driver. I have uninstalled it in device manager and it reads as generic again. But Im still getting bsod on windows exit.
