Computer randomly tells me it will shutdown in 1 minute.

I have an hp latop that I have had for almost 2 years next month. Today I put the computer in sleep mode and then I turned it back on no later than 5 minutes from putting it to sleep mode and suddenly I get this random arrow message saying that my computer has ran into a critical problem and that it will shut down in 1 minute and I need to save my work what would cause this type of behavior. o sorry forgot the biggest piece of information im not sure it only happened today I have had the laptop going on two years this is the first incident this has ever happened

I see you have McAfee on your system. Many feel that this is not the best protection and often causes problems.

There are a number of free (not trial) AV real time apps (MS, Avast, and AVG) and a number of free scanners (Malwarebytes, ESET). If there is a consenus around here on AV it would be MS security essentials and Malwarebytes. I use Avast and Malwarebytes and ESET online scanner

The other consensus is only one real time AV app running at one time - neither of the the two scanners I mentioned cause any problems with real time apps

well it happened after I awoke the pc from sleep mode. It was in sleep mode and I turned it on, after awaking it from sleep mode i immediately got the error. There is no way for me to tell if it does this when it goes into sleep mode because in sleep mode the screen is black and the pc goes into a hibernation state that inhibits me from diagnosing its current state. i hope this answers the question if not can you ask the question in a more detailed manner

the mcafee icon on my firefox browser is only the mcafee site advisor its the browser plugin that checks for websites in google to tell you if a website has been reported as safe or not. I dont have the actually mcaafee virus protection installed on my system. I am currently using AVG the free edition.

ok, thanks re: McAfee... umm some folks might say AVG could be the culprit.... but

I've found that hibernation cuase more trouble than it's worth and recommend it be turned off. If you absolutely require it, you can turn it back on. Often just clearing out the hibernation file solves the problem.

in an elevated command prompt (right click, run as administrator enter the following command

powercfg -H off

then exit and reboot.

your can turn it back on with

powercfg - H on

see if that helps. I'll step back and let Golden follow the path he started.

thanks i think my post did not answer his question i hope it did im anticipating his response to see if it did ill clear out my hibernation files as suggested to be honest how would hibernation even be a real use when you can just use sleep mode

Troubleshooting an issue is more effective when questions asked are answered - we can't see what you see, we don't know the history of the problem, etc.

Sleep keeps stuff in RAM, power failures loses data in memory.
Hibernation stores stuff on the hard drive, power failure does NOT lose data since it's on the drive and will be restored at the next boot.

Hibernation allows corruption to creep in, if the file is bad, the data is bad. If a bug lives in the file, it gets reloaded from the hibernation file. So, turning off hibernation deletes the file. No file no corruption. You might still have a bug, but it won't manifest itself after coming out of hibernation, it might however shows it's presence in some other way.

Before you re-instate hibernation, if you choose to do so, make sure your system is clean using current and up-to-date Malware (AV) protection.

Google: MS Security Essentials, Avast - real time protection | one or the other, not both
Google: Malwarebytes, ESET online scanner - on-demand malware, both are compatible with real-time protection.

Soooo, getting back to Golden's unanswwered question: Does this only happen when it goes into SLEEP mode?

Thanks.... what's the status of the issue? Did you turn off hibernation?

Is your system up-to-date? Launch Windows update and check for updates even if it say your system is upto date.

Have you checked your system for malware?

Malwarebytes and ESET online are good on demand scanners - just be sure to install the free versions and always be alert during the install (many free version now bundle other things such as toolbars that you don't want or need - untick any checkboxes that offer software not directly related to what you want to install. Some also offer a trial version - you want the FREE version, not a trial)

MDO is great for offline scanning.

MSE and Avast offer good real time protection (choose one or another - don't have two real time protection apps running at teh same time. Most on demand scanners run fine with a real time app).

What is the UNREGISTERED VERSION in your image in post# 1?

If your system is up-to-date and the scans show no malware, we'll try a different tact.
