Computer screen hangs all the time. Please help

I am running windows 7 32bit ultimate which I changed from vista. Now this is a problem i've been having for a long time.

When I leave my computer on for a long while and plugged in ( doesn't happen when it's not plugged in) My computer screen hangs.... Nothing happens.Sometimes it's stuck on black sometimes it isn't. I have to do a HARD reset everytime. When this happens windows tries a chkdsk check. I have checked the logs and simply don't get them.

I have no idea if that information is any use. It NEVER helps regardless so I merely just skip it these days.

This problem has been annoying me for years now. Is it a hardware problem? Any ideas or questions?

It could be many things. HD, OS, hardware, memory, etc.

Let start with some basic tests

Run SFC /scannow (a system file check) to verify the OS. Let us know the results at the end.

Run memtest to test your memory

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.


Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot. Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Let us know the results on both.

I am thinking it is a power plan issue because you probably upgraded instead of doing the recommended clean install when going from vista to win7

I would say it was a power plan issue myself but fact is. When I was with vista I had this program too.. plus a number of others which gladly disappeared when I went 7. But this remained.

OK downloading and scanning now thanks ill let you know.

ok the first scan said it found nothing. The SCANNOW that is.. Trying memtest now.

If it IS a powerplan issue how can I resolve this?
