Hi there,

Please see the att screen shots for my computers WEI and config, its a Dell Inspiron 5110, 3years old. It had a BSOD issue couple of years ago, I had carried out a clean re-instal, now again I've done a clean re-instal a month or so ago.

The problem areas are:-
1. It suddenly slows down after hibernation.
2. It has shutdown on its own couple of times too.
3. It is over heating.

I do not know what to do. Is it time to change the laptop?

Thanks

I would give it a good cleaning. Probably dirt and fuzz inside.

Is your fan working properly? Also I never suggest allowing lappy to hibernate or sleep unless unplugged !
If you're up to the task and when you last cleaned the lappy maybe you noticed if you had clear access the the cpu cooler but you could always if the case pull the cpu cooler and clean completely re-installing with new thermal compound?

I had not cleaned it myself. I had got it done from someone. Maybe, I'll ask him to do it again.

And only hibernates, when I shut the lid and its mostly running on battery.

Never hurts to check out what's going on under the back panels, ram access, hard drive access and if you're lucky then the mobo's cpu and cooler are also easily accessed and if so then Q-Tips and compressed air will super clean the fan and air paths. Unlikely after 3 years the thermal paste is exhausted. But if you are up to it or just not your cup o tea then have it done. I clean all my computers every 90 days needed or not.

Why does the laptop slow down?

Cpu's are throttled back when they get too hot, to prevent damage = slows down. When it gets too hot, it shuts down completely. If this didn't happen, you'd just fry the chip. A friend brought a tower pc to me once that would only get to the POST screen, then reboot. I took the side off and the cpu fan was jammed with fluff. It was shutting down due to overheating. Quick clean - fixed.

I had checked again with the guy who had serviced my laptop and he confirmed, he had cleaned it and used a new thermal compound. In any case I'll get him to do it again.

Will using a cooling pad help?? It was suggested by this repair guy to use the cooling pad.

I seriously doubt reapplying compound is going to help unless the guy finds he misapplied or re-installed the cooler poorly the first time. Never put a laptop on bedding or your lap for long periods and yes a cooler can help but isn't going to correct a major problem which could be but I hope isn't a issue of a component that's going or on it's last legs.
