Computer starts up with Windows Vista boot screen

Last week I started up my computer and right before the logon screen was supposed to show up, it just restarted. (I guess it was a blue screen?) It told me that Windows failed to start the last time and it asked me if I wanted to use Startup Repair. Since I had nothing to lose, I just went ahead. So then it kept saying "Your computer was unable to start" and it asked me if I wanted to do system restore, but I thought that would be useless, as half of the time System Restore in Windows Recovery Environment doesn't work for me!!1 It really wasn't doing anything, so I just went ahead and turned the computer off. So when I started it up, instead of Starting Windows, I see the Windows Vista boot screen. Oddly enough, it's faster than the normal boot screen. Now, before anyone asks me if anything related to Vista is on my computer, the answer to that question is no. All I really want to know is how to restore it back to the Windows 7 boot screen. I tried bcdedit /set {current} locale en-US, but that didn't work. I would have tried bcdboot %WinDir% /l en-US, but I didn't want to run into any problems.

Are there any other ways to fix this? Not that it's a problem or anything, it just looks... wrong.

Obvious question shadow is is this machine upgraded from Vista to 7?

Is it actually a Windows Vista boot screen or just a low graphic Windows 7 boot screen? Does it say "Vista" anywhere on the boot screen? I do believe Windows 7 will show a degraded simple boot screen if it gets stuck in a low resolution or is booting up in safe mode. Check device manager to see if your video card and Monitor are shown correctly. You may want to update or reinstall your video drivers.

Get into your BIOS and search for 'Allocated/shared video memory' (name can be a bit different). If you find it, set it to 8 MB or more. Save and exit. Now check how it goes.

So I'll tell you, changing allocated video memory won't do a thing, the "Vista boot screen" is w7 startup repair trying to run, let it.

I know what I posted might not help the OP, but I'm not trying to be smartass at all and not just posting total crap. In my case, setting shared video memory in the BIOS to anything below 8 MB brings up the vista boot screen instead of the standard 7 one. I never had vista on my system. This happens because Windows 7 boot screen uses 32 bit color, so it does need some "extra" shared vid memory in order to load. I have never tried this on modern systems though.

Was just posting a potential solution that might accidently solve OP's problem. There's no harm in trying. We are sitting thousands of kilometers away from whom we are trying to help, so the only option is to post all possible solutions.

Thank you all for your answers. To answer the question, no, I did not upgrade from Windows Vista. Yes, it's actually the boot screen from Windows Vista. It doesn't say Vista anywhere, it just has the old black screen with the green progress bar. My video card and monitor are both showing up correctly in Device Manager, so there's nothing wrong with that. And no, my computer isn't trying to go into startup repair. If it were doing that, it would tell me "Windows is loading files..."

It comes up here irregularly and has happened to me several times. If the bcd edit given in http://www.sevenforums.com/customization/164216-windows-7-falls-back-vista-boot-animation.html doesn't help then all I've seen that works is to Clean Reinstall making sure to delete all partitions during a booted install. If that fails to help wipe the HD first with Diskpart Clean Command

This is a graphics problem. If all your video settings are OK and if your screen resolution is normal, try to play with the monitor calibration.

But if nothing else is on the blink, you can also leave it as is. Then it is more of an academic problem than a real problem.

I have two computers (DVR and DVD and Streaming machines)that are connected to TV's by HDMI and they both do this. Once the login screen appears the resolution changes to 1080 and 720. The TV is expecting those resolutions but the computer booting past the bios does not provide them so Windows drops into a fall back graphics mode the TV can display as the TV communicates the resolutions it can display via the data lines in the HDMI cable. TV's are not as flexible resolution wise as monitors. My EEPC notebook does the same thing as it has a weird resolution. Absolutely nothing to worry about, frankly when the screen show nothing is when you start to wonder.
