As soon as you power on your computer, immediately start clicking the F8 key and keep clicking until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears. Once you get into the Advanced Boot Options menu you should be able to use your up/down arrows to select (highlight) Safe Mode. Click Enter and Safe Mode should start. (You'll see the words Safe Mode on all four corners of the screen.) From Safe Mode I'd try to access System Restore and roll back your computer to a restore point before this problem first began.

If a restore point doesn't fix thing, you might want to go through this article for other troubleshooting steps.

There is no prompt that tells you to start clicking F8. That's why you have to start clicking it as soon as you power up the computer. Are you saying that F8 just won't work? Can you access your BIOS? As soon as you power on the computer what happens if you start clicking F2 or F12 (the usual ways to access setup?)

If you can access the BIOS you might be able to change the boot order to boot from the CD/DVD drive as the first option. Then you could insert the XP install disk and boot fom it.

Please post back the exact error message. Are you prompted to "Press Any Key to boot disk" first? Do you see the disk loading before the message. Is it possible it is bypassing the CD and trying to boot the HD?

You will need to be able to boot the CD to repair this.

Perhaps you can make a video or take camera snaps of this attempt to boot CD as well as the smiley-face you said you get when it attempts to boot HD. Attach the pics using paper clip in reply box, upload video to Youtube and attach link.
